I am using NOD-32. I have found it very good as compared to other anti virus programs.

Yes these both are good but they slow down the computer system. They require more space for their efficient working. For these you should have at least 1 GB RAM.

I suppose 1GB of RAM is not such an issue these days.

well every one had its own review for the antinvirus and all computer programms as you also observed however you can select antivirus according to your computer capability memory and other factors for instance someone AVG when i have P-4 and using AVERA as i had dual core it doesnt mean that avera is good then avg it is not like advertise,
here is a little obersvation some orgnization had published on the internet might help you out.........

1. Avira AntiVir Personal for WindowsAvira AntiVir Personal for Windows has an easy-to-use interface and pre-configured scan tasks to quickly scan your most important drives and folders. Right-click scans can be performed on individual files and folders in Explorer or on the desktop. Or, files can be dragged and dropped into the AntiVir console for quick scanning.

Avira AntiVir Personal can be used in Safe Mode, a definite plus for removing stubborn infectors or cleaning a system that might otherwise be unable to boot into Windows.

Runs on supported versions of Windows 2000 (server and workstation). as well as the 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the following: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003, and Windows Server 2008.

AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic provides free antivirus protection for Windows XP/2000/NT/ME/98. The svelte scanner installed only 34MB and 3 running processes to our Windows XP Pentium 4 test system, making it an excellent option for those with older PCs or limited system resources.

Small footprint ideal for even older PCs

Comprehensive reporting options

Scans can be run in Safe Mode

Cons

Sluggish connections to update server

Description

AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic is a free antivirus scanner.

Support options are limited, but this is increasingly the case with even paid-for scanners.

Sports expected features, including automatic updates, scheduled scanning, and various scan tasks.

Guide Review - AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic

Sporting a traditional interface that's easy to navigate, AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic provides pre-configured scan tasks for scanning local drives, local hard disks, removal drives, the Windows System and My Documents folders, as well as manual scanning options for scanning items listed under My Computer. Right-click scans can be performed on individual files and folders in Explorer or on the desktop. Additionally, files can be dragged and dropped into the AntiVir console for quick scanning.

AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic does not provide adware/spyware removal (this feature is available in paid versions of the product). As with other free antivirus scanners, support options are limited to online help forums and knowledgebases.

AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic can be used in Safe Mode, a definite plus for removing stubborn infectors or cleaning a system that might otherwise be unable to boot into Windows.

The comprehensive reporting options are ideal for advanced users who want to drill down into the scan results. However, more novice users might be overwhelmed. In the latter case, ignoring the report and relying on the results reflected in the interface might be best.

2. PC Tools iAntivirus for Mac and windows

PC Tools iAntivirus guards against Mac only malware, including viruses, worms, trojans, spyware and adware. Unlike some Mac antivirus software, PC Tools iAntivirus doesn't cover Windows-based malware, which helps keep performance costs and system impact low but may not be the best bet choice in a mixed Mac/Windows environment.

PC Tools iAntivirus is free for home (and home office) use and currently supports Intel-based Macs running OS X 10.5 only. An unobtrusive and efficient Mac antivirus software option that dedicated Mac users will want to try.

Simple but Elegant

Like other PC Tools offerings, iAntivirus steers clear of bloat - providing exactly the features you'd expect in an antivirus software as unobtrusively as possible. For example, there's an option to disable the dock icon if you want to keep things tidy. But if you do leave the iAntivirus dock icon enabled, you can drag and drop files and folders there for quick and easy scans.

PC Tools iAntivirus features realtime protection, scheduled quick scans, and scheduled updates. Monitoring mode keeps iAntivirus working truly in the background, ideal for those who don't want to be disturbed by alerts or anyone trying to conserve laptop batteries.

PC Tools iAntivirus detects and removes Mac-specific malware only. This can be either very good or very bad, depending on your perspective. While a Mac-only focus keeps iAntivirus running lighter and faster than other Macintosh antivirus software, it also means a Mac user could inadvertently share files infected with Windows-based malware. Macro viruses, for example, aren't detected by iAntivirus - corporate users sharing Office documents between Windows and Mac users will want to make sure macro virus protection on both sides is enabled.

PC Tools iAntivirus is currently in beta, supports Intel-based Mac OS X v10.5 only, and is free for home (or home office) use. Corporate users can purchase a license for approximately $30 which includes free 24/7 tech support.

3. AVG Free Edition for Windows

AVG Free Edition is a classic, one of the longest running free antivirus packages available for Windows XP/2000/NT/ME/98. Installing only 30Mb of files and 4 running processes, AVG Free Edition is the smallest antivirus scanner we've tested and may well be the best choice for an older PC with limited system resources.

Small footprint ideal for even older PCs

Easy-to-use, attractive interface

Cons

Limited support for compressed/archive types

Higher than average rate of false positives

Description

AVG Free Edition offers core competency in virus detection.

Support options are limited, but this is increasingly the case with even paid-for scanners.

Attractive interface is easy-to-use; updates quickly and efficiently.

Guide Review - AVG Free Edition

Like any scanner we feature in our reviews, AVG has been certified to remove 100% of in-the-wild viruses - but results with zoo viruses are a low 81% and those same tests resulted in 11 false positives (detection of viruses in non-infected, legitimate files). Despite these drawbacks, AVG Free Edition has a long list of admirers who will be quick to point out that tests reflect a snapshot in time and may not always be indicative of future or past performance.

AVG Free Edition does not provide adware/spyware removal (though it is available in the paid version of the product). As with other free antivirus scanners, support options are limited to online help forums and knowledgebases.

AVG Free Edition can be used in Safe Mode, a definite plus for removing stubborn infectors or cleaning a system that might otherwise be unable to boot into Windows.

4. Avast Home Edition for Windows

In addition to standard scanning modes, Avast Home Edition also provides scans on bootup. This can greatly increase the chance of removing stubborn infectors, particularly those that use resuscitators to thwart removal attempts. Supports workstation only versions of Windows 95/98/Me, 2000, XP, and Vista.

AVAST 4 Home Edition provides free antivirus protection for Windows XP/2000/NT/ME/98. The scanner installed just under 40MB and 6 running processes to our Windows XP Pentium 4 test system, taking a slightly bigger toll than other free antivirus scanners, but still well suited for older PCs or those with limited system resources.

Small footprint ideal for even older PCs

Scan on bootup helps thwart resuscitators

Removes some adware and spyware

Cons

WinAmp-style interface may not appeal to all users

Description

AVAST 4 Home Edition is a free antivirus scanner.

Support options are limited, but this is increasingly the case with even paid-for scanners.

Sports standard antivirus features, plus adware and spyware removal.

- AVAST 4 Home Edition
AVAST 4 Home Edition installs an interface that could be described as either clever or cumbersome, depending on your point of view. Borrowing on the WinAmp-style skins, the look can be changed by downloading a new skin from the vendor's website. Regardless of the skin, however, it's less than intuitive for those who prefer a standard Windows interface with easy-to-browse menus. AVAST 4 Home Edition is the only one of the free scanners to offer scans on bootup. This can greatly increase the chance of removing stubborn infectors, particularly those that use resuscitators to thwart removal attempts. (Each of the free scanners can be run in Safe Mode, however).

AVAST 4 Home Edition provided limited adware and spyware removal, nabbing 33% of the active components we tracked on our test system. Though 33% is certainly a poor removal rate, it is the only one of the free antivirus scanners to offer adware and spyware removal - and is one of the few to do so even among paid-for antivirus scanners. Further, the deficiency appeared to be due to a lack of signatures, rather than any particular struggle to remove infectors. (Indeed, the scan on bootup option virtually ensures AVAST an easier time of removing adware and spyware, provided the appropriate signature is in place).

Alwil Software, makers of AVAST, offers support for the free version via email, online help forums and knowledgebases.

5. ClamXav for Mac and windows

ClamXav is based on the open source ClamAV virus scanner. Popular among open source fans, in practice ClamAV lags behind the detection capabilities of commercial antivirus software. For Mac users, this may not be a significant limitation given that there are far fewer malware impacting the Mac OS. If you're looking for free Mac antivirus software, ClamXav is certainly a virus scanner worth trying.

Capable Enough

The free ClamXav antivirus scanner offers limited realtime scanning, the ability to scan email, on-demands scans, and support for multiple languages: Danish, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Spanish and Taiwanese. ClamXav fully supports Mac OS X v10.4 (Tiger) and 10.5 (Leopard), with limited support for v10.3 (Panther) and 10.2 (Jaguar).

Because ClamXav is based on ClamAV, detection of Windows-based malware is also included. However, ClamAV in general tends to be behind the curveball when it comes to detecting malware. This may be less of an issue for Mac users given that there are fewer threats impacting the Mac OS. Still, if you're a corporate Mac user or looking for up-to-the-minute protection (or even up-to-the-month), ClamXav may not be your best bet.

ClamXav Sentry offers limited realtime scanning; designate the folders you want it to watch and instruct ClamXav Sentry to load when your computer is started. Of course, this means malware that gets dropped into folders not watched by ClamXav Sentry won't be detected unless you perform a manual scan of the system and manual scans via ClamXav can be tediously slow.

ClamXav is by no means the most capable Mac antivirus scanner and it's definitely not the fastest. But for the price of free, it's worth taking for a test drive.

Norton Internet Security 2010, nothing else matches it.

Other are good for your own satisfaction; still viruses sneak through them somehow, and you will always be feignedly prompted "You are protected" , I have seen it myself in my own computer. But I have been using NIS 2010 for an year now, and I have never seen any malicious program managing to sneek through it.

Dont go for avast or avg, take my professional advice .
