Hello!
The requirement for writing to any newspaper is simple: 1. Your article should be clear, concise, and written in good English. 2. You should try to write in journalistic language. 3. The style of writing depends on you, whether you should go for narrative and descriptive style, or it could be logical and argumentative, and yet again it could be humorous and a light reading; it all depends on your natural style of writing. 4. Currency should be kept in mind, means that the article should be current. 5. And you have asked particularly about writing for Dawn newspaper, well, actually you could write for the magazine section of Dawn which comes out every Sunday. The reason for this is that they only print the regular columns of their staff writers inside the op-ed (Opinion-editorial) pages. If you want to write for the newspaper, you could go for writing a letter to the editor, and you can write in any style for this section. The email address for this is: letters@dawn.com And one other thing, if you write an article for their magazine section, they pay you well, like one of my article was printed with 2,000 words and i have provided them with a lot of pictures, they paid 2,000 rupees. (The email ids for their magazine section is provided in that section, please have a look at them) Hope I was of any help Regards, Nonchalant

You are welcome! Well actually, that article was printed in 2 weeks, as I called the head office in karachi, I needed that article to be printed in just that time as I was having my viva and i wanted to show that article to my external examiner. But my other articles were printed in 2 to 3 months time, and hey, they are really slow in paying you, usually it takes 4 to 6 to 8 months But anyway, it's good to see your name in print in such a prestigious paper.. All the best to you! The secret is, Try writing unconventionally, with a unique touch and a distinct style of your own! ciao and best of luck! regards, Nonchalant!

Dear Nonchalant! You are requested to answer the following Questions.. 1) Please provide the exact e,mails, where the articles and letters are to be sent. 2) Is it necessary to provide the pictures/photos along with article? 3) An article shall be comprised of how many words? 4) Do they publish it? or my effort will be just in vain? 5) Do they publish the articles on EDITORIAL PAGE as well? 6) And what about the letters to the editor, do they pay for it as well! Here it goes...

I'll try my best to answer your queries: 1. Please note: The Review, Sci-tech World, Magazine and Images are no longer printed as separate magazines during the week. They have now been combined into the "Images on Sunday" magazine, which is published every Sunday. So, the email id for this section is: images@dawn.com So, if you have any article which you want to send to a section called Review Sci-tech or Magazine, you can use this email id, just write in the subject that "article for printing". 2. No, it is not necessary to provide pictures along with the article, but one of my article was printed in The News in march, they paid me 1,800 rupees for that but they also said that if I had provided a picture relevant to that article, they would have paid me 500 rupees more. So, if you can provide the pic, then its good, but its not a requirement. 3. Word count matters with the contents of that particular subject, in case if they did not have restricted you regarding this. Usually, I send them articles containing 1,500 words maximum, and they edit to it approximately 1000 words (and the juicy politics are always sacrificed in editing, sigh! ) 4. Look, what happens in Dawn is that they have got a huge number of contributors, usually from abroad, so I would advice you to start with daily "The News international", they usually gives a break to new writers (here your good effort will not be in vain). If you notice, today the regular and best contributors of Dawn, like NFP etc, have started their writing careers with The News, and once they get acknowledged for this, then getting published in Dawn is an easy task. 5. For printing your write ups on Editorial page, you have to be some big wig from the professional world, or politics etc, or you could be a scholar etc. If you are not this, then you have a place in the Magazine section, but to make your place there, your write up should be extra ordinary. Again i'll say that start with The News. (If you want the email ids of The News, i can provide it too) 6. No, you are not paid for your letter to the editor. Regards, Nonchalant!

1. Yes, of course, that was what I was trying to say, The News publishes articles and you should start writing for it. 2. That depends on the traffic of articles which they receive and on the section for which you are writing an article. Usually, they print artilces in the main newspaper in 2 to 3 months (this include TNS <The News on Sunday>), but one of my article which I wrote for the supplementary section of The News called Education-Zine, they printed it after six months!! (and they paid for it after eleven months!!!). See, that depends on the section of the paper. 3. The email ids of all the section of The News are included in the respective sections, there you can find them. Sections of The News can be viewed here at the left hand side: http://www.thenews.com.pk/ It includes sections like YOU magazine for women (you can also write for it), here is the link: http://jang.com.pk/thenews/jun2009-w...009/index.html The other section is The News on Sunday, here is the link: http://jang.com.pk/thenews/jun2009-w...009/index.html Education-zine, here is the link: http://jang.com.pk/thenews/nov2008-w...008/index.html The weekly magazine for teenagers is: (You can also write a cover story for them, of four pages, and they pay you really well!) I can provide their phone number too, of the main head office in karachi. http://jang.com.pk/thenews/jun2009-w...009/index.html 4. Hey, if you are a scholar or a research student or a doctorate student etc etc, just call them and tell your details to the editor at islamabad, and tell them that you have written an article which you want to publish in the editorial and opinion pages, and after mailing them your article, just wait or its printing if they approve it then! the phone numbers of The News are: Rawalpindi 051-5962444 Lahore 042-6367480 Quetta 081-841078 Karachi 021-2630611 And the group editor is Shaheen Sehbai, his email id is: ssehbai@gmail.com (Wait i'll confirm it again, if its still in my inbox) 5. My email id? you can write to me for your queries at Regards, Nonchalant!
