I suggest you to read Readers' Digest instead of English novels. It carries a lot of information about various topics and it is also helpful in improving English...

Well...your suggestion is also very nice but novels are no less.
They contain history, info of different cultures and societies.

I would like to suggest these novel:

1)pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin
2)Wuthring heights By Emily Bronte
3)Two Solitudes By Hugh Mc Lennen(a must read)
4)A passage to India By E.M.Forester

Apart from that you can read novel by Thomas Hardy,Charles Dickens etc.

These are some classics, but if you want to read new ones..then go for:
1)The Help(published in 2009)
2)A case of Exploding mangoes BY Muhammad Hanif
3)Novels by Dan Brown(if you like mystery and conspiracy theories)
4)In other rooms,Other wonders by Danial Muneenuddin
5)The girl who played with fire by Stieg Larsson
6)To kill a mocking bird By Harper Lee
7)A Kite Runner By Khalid Hussaini

ALL THE BEST
(i finish 1 novel in 2 daysBeat me if you can)

I think "God of small things" by Arundhati Roy is a must read.

Its one amongst the best books i've read so far in my life. Reasons are: great theme of "who should one love, how and how much", beautiful characters of velutha, estha and rahel...and the most beautiful is the handling of the plot...
i wish i could also write in such a way..

My second suggestion would be "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho.
Reason: read it once. you will know the reason.

@ shooting star
i can finish one in a day...and i've done it with both these novels as well :-) try harder!

You guys are really bookworms in the very essence of the word. I mean, literally, it has scarcely occurred to me that I had finished a novel in a week that also if at all I choose to finish it. Most of the times, I had to switch to a better one only to switch once more.

Anyways, my favourites (The ones I could finish) are;

1. Sidhaarth
2. Old Man and the Sea by Earnest Hemingway
3. Animal Farm by George Orwell
4. Alchemist by Paulo Coehlo
5. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
6. Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown
7. A Farewell to the Arms by Earnest Hemingway

The ones I liked, but couldn't finish include;

1. War and Peace ~ Leo Tolstoy
2. A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens
3. 1984 by George Orwell
4. The Fifth Mountain by Paulo Coelho

And the list goes on...

i would also include in the list "The Mother" by Maxim Gorky and "The Idiot" by Dostoevsky...both are simply something out of this world..
