O level student scores record 23 As
Published: January 24, 2011

ISLAMABAD: A student in Islamabad, Ibrahim Shahid, set a new world record by scoring 23 As in Cambridge O level exams.

Shahid, a student of a private school in Islamabad, sat for 24 subjects and scored 23 As.

Attributing his success to his parents, Shahid recalled an incident where his teacher in Australia had written him off, stating that he would “never excel”. He added that every child is special and everyone has their own capabilities.

Earlier, Ali Moeen Nawazish, also a Pakistani student, had set a world record by securing 23 As in A level Cambridge exams.

While I appreciate and commend him on his efforts, they were completely redundant as far as practical life or even success is considered. I have done my masters through a reputable university and worked in a Multinational corporation and after carefully analyzing the achievements of my colleagues at work, and those at other corporations, I have come to the conclusion that GPA (or your grade) means nothing. As long as you have a decent GPA (say 3.0 plus) from a decent university (say IBA, LUMS, LSE) you have a shot at all the best corporations. What actually distinguishes a candidate is his confidence, presentation skills, team player ability and general knowledge (although to a lesser extent). I have seen friends who scored 3.9 GPA in MBA but still can't find a job because they are 'nerds' in true sense of the word. They don't have the confidence to go speak to a girl and even if they do e.g. in an interview they become nervous or start stuttering. They lacked presentation skills and couldn't make it through the 2nd rounds of placement of various institutions.

In my opinion, 10 or 11 As for this kid would have been more than sufficient. He should have focused on extra curricular such as sports and debating. Probably should have joined some sort of music or dramatics society too. My guess is he is aiming to go and study abroad and we all know how much they despise nerds and emphasis extra curricular activities.

Come on dude instead of appreciating a boy who has provided some thing for the Pakistanis to be proud of in these days of gloom, you are discouraging him.
Well done young brother Ibrahim Shahid, we are proud of you

And what is there to recall?

If you disagree, present rational arguments for your case. Obviously you don't know the stark realities of life
