This is one tough language you have developed the need to learn. I personally am learning Pashto from a few Pakhtun friends. It has taken me a hell lot of time to get where i am, and that too is nowhere as of yet .

As of now, i can speak quite a bit but understand much better. A plus point is that since i have friends who speak both dialects, i have no difficulty in comprehending and understanding the differences between the southern and northern dialects.

Make some Pakhtun friends, learn basic Pashto vocabulary, and try to speak as much of it as you can. Don't be afraid. Nothing to be ashamed of that you're learning it.

If you need any more details on material or technique, plz feel free to mail me on the address in my profile.

I agree with saad Qaisraani.
You must make a pakhtun friend in this regard, this way u will learn it easily, otherwise its tough.
During LLB my roomate was a non pashto speaker, but after completion of LLB he can speak it fluently now.
NUML is another option.
