Pakistan and India have become permanent members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), a group dominated by Russia and China. This membership offers Pakistan and India greater access to the energy resources of Central Asia.
Pakistan had been an observer at SCO since 2005. It had been a regular participant in the meetings of SCO and was the first SCO observer to apply for full membership in 2010. Pakistan’s request for membership was approved at the SCO heads of state summit in Ufa, Russia.
Russian President Vladimir Putin told Chinese state news agency Xinhua ahead of the summit that the accession of Pakistan and India would increase SCO’s “relevance, both in the region and worldwide.”... he called for greater cooperation in fighting drug trafficking from Afghanistan and the financing of terrorism.
Chinese President Xi Jinping called on member states to uphold the “Shanghai Spirit” for common development, he also urged SCO member states to expand people-to-people exchanges.
Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Cheng Guoping said in a news briefing that “…India and Pakistan’s admission to the SCO will play an important role in the SCO’s development and it will play a constructive role in pushing for the improvement of their bilateral relations.”
The SCO – whose members also include Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan – is mainly focused on security, although critics say it has done little to prepare the region’s weaker states for potential fallout from instability in Afghanistan on the bloc’s southern border.
