How much English matters in written exam of the CSS?
Despite knowing the fact that English language plays a very important role in helping candidate pass the written exam, but what level of it, one needs to be at, in order to crack this particular written part of the exam? What minimum level of English, examiner expects/wants from a candidate? Is there a way that we could know that we've achieved a required level of it, which can get us through this exam? Why do we see sometimes that intelligent students, having excellent English skills, fail written exam or essay? Why does it happen? What do you people say?

Personally, I believe one should be able to write comprehensible sentences, regardless of vocab.
On a scale of 1/10 (1 being the lowest), a person should be 6-7/10 in order to attempt the paper. I've seen people making grammatical errors in every other sentence they write - and yet they manage to clear the paper. What matters then is their maturity, argument strength/backing and how wide, open, and all-encompassing view they have of issues. Again, this is all what I believe personally.

Hi,
I often wonder about this as well. I wish I knew the answer. I guess in English papers, both precis and essay, you need a to have good solid command because examiners are going to be English teachers. Other subjects like optionals and PA, CA, Islamiat, EDS you can manage with few errors because those examiners will be more concerned with what you have to say than your grammar unless you really really mess up sentences. That's my understanding so far. I can be wrong.

Simplicity is the key. Don't use verbose language. For example: laugh, giggle, smile, chuckle, guffaw, snicker, titter are different words but when people try to show their vocabulary, they muddle up dictionary. In essay, quality matters more than quantity for both grammar and arguments.
ps: My personal view.

As far as English language is concerned, I personally believe that one should be able to at-least communicate his answer in an effective manner. Besides, what matters a lot is justification followed by facts as well as concrete examples devoid obsolete or repetitive points. Furthermore, mainly in competitive exams, balanced view, maturity of ideas and feasible solutions of any attempted questions would undoubtedly play key role as compare to bombastic language, because in the end of a day, it is ideas not language which decides the fate of an aspirant.
Thank You. |

I thank you all from the depth of my heart for taking your precious time out of your schedule and giving your opinions/suggestions here, as every passing minute is extremely important, and if spent wisely, then it would decide our future, but on top of it, the most important thing to do is to spread knowledge which makes Allah happy. Our knowledge starts increasing once we start sharing it with others, and I have experienced it in my life many times. Working hard + Ibadat + Helping others is the only way which can help us move ahead & achieve what we're striving for. Stay blessed everyone.
