I for one know and believe that you can pass CSS with just a little effort in knowing facts (and combining them to create a rational perspective) and mainly focusing on how you present those facts with your own analysis; i.e, you must give a balanced view. No one would want someone representing their country's finest to have hard-lined views about ANYTHING.

First, write a paragraph on any topic. Read it, and change the words with their synonyms. Again read it and try to change the sentence formation if possible. Repeat the process till you are satisfied with your paragraph. After 3 or 4 iterations you will find your paragraph very impressive and full of "BIG" words. Remember: Practice is the key to crack Essay paper.

Okay what do you mean by 'Big words'? How about this, try to find an article or a piece of writing on the internet or anywhere you can, see if the writing style appeals to you, whether big words are included according to you.
To be honest I would never advocate the above approach. In the process of including big words you will lose comprehension and meaning of what you want to say. Because for the above technique to work, you need to know which word needs to be changed, and once you change the word you sometimes have to change the sentence structure as well. All throughout my learning, planning has always been emphasised. We are told to plan our answers before we write them in our exams, we are told to plan our essays before we type them out. Once you write down a detailed plan, you have written your idea once, and when you write your essay, you are writing your idea twice, making you more comfortable with the content of your essay, hence easing the pressure and letting you think of better words. But since you have time to practice, this is what you should do, write a plan, 1st draft essay, correct it, add words, second draft essay, see if the flow of the essay is good. A badly structured essay is uncomfortable to read. Keep revising the essay you have written until you are satisfied. Someone to mark your essay in the process will help you as they will pick out your mistakes quicker. |

The way Daniyal writes is dated, in my opinion, yes he knows big words, but some words have died down and are less frequently used. Nowadays the emphasis is on simple sentences and simple language, not too plain, but medium. When I write essays I use words appropriate to the topic and my writing style. Dawn writer use simple and easy language because they have a large target audience. Each topic invites its own unique vocabulary, certain topics have their set of 'jargon', try learning them and using them.
Repository is a word usually used in business studies etc, and if you look at his options that's where he most likely picked it up from. So you will learn words if you read widely, read some articles on different websites, the economist, Aljeezera, Independent, Guardian you will get an idea of different writing styles and it will subsequently broaden your vocabulary. Oh and try to read different topics, even the boring ones (I could have used the word 'tedious' but its a forum) As for the rest of the words he has used, the more you read the more you will get used to them, the more you get used to them the more you will use them. If you have a smartphone or a PC/Laptop, get the kindle app, download a few books you like, and each time you come across a word you do not understand, double tap that word, and the app has a built in dictionary, this way you will new learn words without opening a dictionary every 5 minutes. |

"As they say,"Great mind think alike" That's what I also thought of his style.I even went and asked my brother to get me some old heavy novels from the library.Because I though his style was outstanding. What I didn't realize was that it just stood out from the rest of the writing. I love boring topics, they were made for me :p. I live to read and read to live. I wish we could e-mail or something;either ways thanks a lot.

In all honesty, any write up glutted with involved words makes it downright repulsive (like this sentence of mine). Flowery expression is one thing, exhbiting your arsenal of complex words is another. What is the difference? Read any good speech (or any article of Arundhati Roy) and any article in the Economist or NY Times, you'll find the difference.
Having a repository of words is important but that does not warrant lucidity coupled with flowery expression. Justice Holmes was an American Justice who wrote extensively on law and political thought. Today, he is eulogized as a litterateur. He says about Montesquieu, "His book had a dazzling success at the moment and since then has probably remodeled the world as much as any other product of the eighteenth century, which burned many forests and sowed many seeds... This was the work of lonely scholar sitting in a library. Like Descartes or Kant, he commanded the future more from his study than Napoleon from his throne.", and that tells you why his legacy lies in being remembered as a literary diva. Boiling it down, read quality expression and practice on your own. There are ample people who were great orators. Read Bhutto's work, Douglas MacArthur speeches, Martin Luthin King's and the list goes on. PS: Since I am myself into writing, I only explained what worked for me. You can certainly disgaree and find something which works better for you. PPS: My apologies for hijacking Daniyal's thread. Last edited by Demonstrative; Thursday, May 07, 2015 at 02:38 AM.
