In my opinion then, perhaps in papers like essay maybe the difference of opinion doesn't matter that much but it is the structure that does!
Two points:
1) Paper is checked as per my understanding by only a single examiner to ensure consistency. Though even if it is not, only broad guidelines can be given to the examiner. Marking a precis is in its very nature subjective.

2) I don't have a problem with exam. It was the examiner's prerogative, and it judged my abilities. I am only saying that it is kind of sad that examiner had picked the paragraph from some random book.

True but I think it didn't change things much.. Maybe one or two sentences radically stretched a word's definition but most were straight forward.

Alternatively, "Had he been here now, we would have no difficulty" should be correct as well, no?
