Default What band in IELTS's written sectoion could be an indicator of success in Essay

Dear all,

I have this strange question for you. What do you think is the minimum IELTS band score in its written part that could roughly indicate success in the Essay paper? My guess is 6 or even 5.5, what do you think?

Regards

P.S: Sorry for the mistake in the title

AoA Sir,

no score in IELTS Academic (written part) could indicate success in Essay paper. Writing as much as you have to do in IELTS is completely different from writing a CSS-type essay, where you don't just have to 'follow the rules' but also have to have a strong line of argument, good structure, and adequate evidence to back your thesis up.

That said, as far as the craft of writing (not arguing!) is concerned you should at the very least have 6 in the writing part to have any chances of penning a convincing essay. If you have 7 or above, I would say you are very much in the game. If someone has 8 and s/he fails the essay paper, it must not be their day.

So optimistically, I'd say 7 should be an indicator of success.

Best!

Yes, I think 6 is a good number for writing. 7 would definitely indicate a good level of writing. What is your opinion on the overall band score in the light of writing section's score? Because somehow, all the sections are connected with each other one way or the other.

I think if your overall IELTS band score is

5 - you need to improve your English - master the basics so that you can deliver fluid expression, at least in writing, if not speaking WITHOUT making mistakes

6 - you are on the right track but need to put in more effort in order to ace CSS

7 - you are doing a fairly good job and a little more effort can raise your English to the distinction-securing level

8 - your English is almost as good as a native speaker. If you're still obsessed with improving it, chances are that it is from a disproportionate fascination for the subject which is resulting in wastage of crucial time you could allocate to other subjects' preparation

Disclaimer: Even if you score 9 in IELTS you will still need to practice the kind of essay expected of a CSS candidate AND memorise other weird things like pairs of words and direct/indirect etc.
