Yes. It is good to use simple words rather than using complex and improper words. One should keep the content simple, clear, relevant and grammatically correct.

I second Amna. It is good to focus on your expressions and grammar instead of cramming vocabulary. Quality of article is depend on clear and balanced sentence structure rather on difficult words.

What I have noticed and felt after passing Essay paper twice is that they need a content which justifies the essay statement. Using simple but relevant words are far better than illogical and complex words which hamper the checking skills of the examiner. Essay should be properly written sentences of wisdom with research on that topic.
