Pakistan at cross roads:

Pakistan has always remained at cross roads since its inception. The main reason behind the difficulties of Pakistan is its geo-strategic location, some external problems like security threat from India, Russia and to a similar extent from Afghanistan, and some internal threats like weak democracy, extremism weak economy, provincial autonomy etc –that have compelled Pakistan to stand away from an independent foreign policy and utilize effectively all its resources for its own betterment. That is why today in the world Pakistan is considered as an unsuccessful state .Looking into problems categorically and carefully it can be easily analyzed that what are the consequences of these problems and how they can be avoided or controlled.

After the creation Pakistan had to face tremendous problems .Some of the problems were natural and some were created by India .The cessation of territories near India by Mountbatten paved the way of hostilities between India and Pakistan: which is currently disputed Kashmir territory. The other problems which were created by India were refugee problem, water crisis, unequal division of finance and others. All these problems created a lot of miseries for Pakistan. The political elite of Pakistan also did not play a good effort on their part.

A democratic country can stabilize itself in any situation but Pakistan could not get this opportunity. The early political leaders of Pakistan were so inefficient that they could not even make the constitution. The constitution of Pakistan was formed almost nine years of its independence. During this period the politicians were just struggling for their own powers and government. This situation created a vacuum in the society .Also the reputation of Pakistan was damaged at international level. This situation with the inclusion of Ayub Khan (a military commander) paved the way for military intervention. Thus a breach was put into the democracy of Pakistan and this added to the misery of Pakistan.

Within two years of its first constitution Pakistan had face a Martial Law administrator. This situation took back Pakistan to its original position when Pakistan had no constitution (because constitution of Pakistan was suspended). Pakistan was morally cut-off from the world because it was a country with dictator as its leader. It is common or frequent in the history of Pakistan that rulers are dictators. The Martial Law of General Ayub, Ziaul haq and musharaf represent a tattered shape Pakistan and its other resources like its economy. Thus, weakening it to a greater extent.

The economy of a country is like its backbone. The economy of a country is a vital resource which can be used for the betterment of whole country means facilities and reforms reaching every person but similar was not done in Pakistan. During the rule of Ayub Khan and Yahya Khan one-third of whole income was lying with 22 families (Adamjee, Dada Bhai, etc). During Zia rule same was the case with Maulvis supporting him. Finally during Musharaf era these benefitted personalities were the same Maulvis and chaudhary brothers (These military rulers are considered here because they have ruled more than half of the Pakistan’s ruling history). That is why still, there is no sound physical, administrative and political structure in Pakistan.

The other problems due to which Pakistan is cross roads can be sum up as Provincial Autonomy: as provinces like NWFP, Baluchistan, Sindh and Punjab are all arguing on that they are not given their due share. Ethnic violence has also remained a graave danger to Pakistan as happened many times in Karachi and other parts of the country and these incidents caused many deaths .Education is also a big problem .Role of woman as a social member of society, health services and other necessities are not still provided adequately also pose a threat of disgruntled masses taking to the streets and cause damage to public as well as private properties. All these problems can damage a state to a greater extent and Pakistan is continuously facing all these dangers. Since Pakistan is a part of the world so it has links with other countries which sometimes to further their agendas pressurize Pakistan because they are major financiers of it. This pressurization is due to important geo-strategic location also.

Geo-strategically Pakistan is very important country. It has its borders with countries like China, India, Iran, Afghanistan and Russia. Pakistan unfortunately had bitter relations with most of her neighbor countries and for most of the time. India and Pakistan almost all the time had no good relations that are why Pakistan was forced to maintain a large army. Afghanistan and Pakistan relations also represent a similar scenario due to issue of Durand line & Pakhtoonistan issue. Iran’s case is no more different after the collaboration of Pakistan with United States of America during cold war. Russia itself was becoming a victim us enmity (U-2 plane incident 1962: This American spy plane flew from Pakistan). This incident also created a large drift between Russia and Pakistan relations. The remaining is China which is time tested friend of Pakistan. This important but hostile situation of geo-strategic location created a lot of miseries and become an stumbling block in the way of its prosperity and have long lasting negative effect I-e Pakistan is at cross roads till yet.

As the effect are concerned Pakistan has become a great burn in the shape of disintegration of east Pakistan (currently Bangladesh). The problems were similar at the time of disintegration of Bangladesh and this giving a big blow to Pakistan’s integrity. This incident left Pakistan at a point where no way seemed feasible to save Pakistan .Pakistan had lost its bigger part. This incident also gave a big blow to Pakistan’s foreign policy as no country came to help.

The foreign policy miserably failed with the fall of Dhaka. Pakistan requested big powers to help her but no gave a good response. Pakistan was not so economically and militarily sound at that time so that she could fight alone with India. Foreign policy of Pakistan was mostly relying on American funds which America did nit gave and Pakistan lost its province. This incident also created a chaos in the society of Pakistan.

The effects of problems of Pakistan are clearly visible in its society. The society of Pakistan does not look like an integrated society. The society does not give a view of a decent society and there are many warring factions in it. The society of Pakistan is considered as a backward society. Pakistani society is far behind in every aspect no education, no healthcare services, no security and no heed is paid by the leaders to improve it. Pakistan has ills in its society corruption is widespread in every organization. Therefore less work is done and more money is wasted. So the society is itself making Pakistan weak. Thus, putting Pakistan one step further in a quagmire from which no way seems out. All the problems and their after effects have put Pakistan into a difficult situation. Now multiple reforms are required to take Pakistan out of this grave difficulty. Reforms can be at different levels, like economic reforms, administrative reforms and Physical reforms.

From the economic point of view new industries should be launched so that more and more labor is employed. Loans should be given to people at reasonable interest and terms. Since, Pakistan is an agricultural country therefore agricultural machinery should be provided along with fertilizers, pesticides and other materials, so that farmers can earn a good profit and increase growth of agriculture. Free education and health services should be introduced. Social sector should be promoted in favor of nation’s goodwill. Private sector should be attracted, so that they can invest their money and generate new opportunities for jobs. Along with economic reforms, administrative reforms are also necessary.

Administrative sector should be re-structured. All flaws and ills of the administrative sector of the government should be eliminated. Red-tapism should be minimized. Justice should be provided. Security should be improved so that people free to move anywhere, anytime and feel safe about their private properties. Social needs of people should be provided at once so that they do not feel alienated of government. Military intervention should be minimized so that people do not have any fear of Martial Law. An independent foreign policy should be made keeping own people into confidence instead of furthering agendas of other countries (like US). These all actions if taken scrupulously can make Pakistan an integrated nation on a way forward to prosperity.

In conclusion we can say that it is due to geo-strategic location, external and internal problems of Pakistan that she is at situation where nothing seems feasible and no way looks clear straight towards achievement of goal. But all this can be achieved if these problems are solved with a will to achieve them.

Nice and comprehensive piece of writing...

one thing I would like to comment on is the title, Pakistan at crossroads, does not seem to suit what you have written. The title should be like Problems of Paksitan or Pakistan in grave situation or challenges faced by pakistan and way out.

Anyone can differ, this is just my opinion...

Don't you think this starting sentence lowers the intensity and cruciality of the situation under discussion? A reader would infer from this statement (esp. in the very beginning) that this is no serious situation for Pakistan at present, as Pakistan has always been at crossroads.
