You are right i should not use such kind of words as like religious affiliation i will change it. The other is societal trend i used this word in the sense of that if we see in some areas in Pakistan so extremism is of high level. As like if in some societies people have a trend of sending kids to private schools or such kind of things. As like if society around me is of extremist type so it will affect me or my children also. I said that in this sense.

Societal Trend is a very ambiguous term dear, it does not itself connotes anything that is pertinent to topic of the Essay. However, you can explain it in the body of the essay but very often the examiner decides the fate of the essay by mere outline. The terms used in the outline must be vivid and self explanatory so that they can convey the comprehensive meanings at the spot.

it's a useful discussion, as English essay is considered to be one of the stumbling block in CSS.. My question to you, Farah, is that, how to choose a particular topic for essay? i have heard many people saying that those who had attempted "Energy Crisis" in CE-2012 (with all due respect to those who attempted it) had less chances of passing, because the topic got generalized. Now how do we know that a particular topic got generalized, and will be attempted by most of the candidates, thus allowing examiner to fail candidates, that produce almost the same knowledge. Secondly, someone (who tried his hand at Css) told me that never to attempt an essay where the examiner is seeking your (means = the candidate's) opinion. How far does this statement hold water?

Though this question has been addressed to Farah, but i would like to give my humble opinion. The answer to your first question is Yes, a topic that has been chosen by majority students give you less edge on other candidates, and this is a "competitive exam", succes in that exam owes to the competitive edge you have on others.

The reason is that the examiner would see more or less the same things and he is also a human being, he gets irritated and results are disappointing for many. BUT my friend this is an exam where stakes are so high, he knows that people strive very hard for that exam, he cannot fail you if you have produced a quality essay for mere a reason that you have chosen an essay that has been generalized, not at all. The fact is that chances are very low in passing such an essay, but if your English structures, grammar, syntax is correct and data is somewhat relevant then you will make your mark. The equation is that, Those who can pass an essay written on Energy crisis securing 40 marks, they are capable to secure 50 marks if they had attempted any other essay. I myself had written my essay on this topic and secured 43 marks, i know that essay had an experiment, if that experiment had not been done, i would have secured 55 marks.

How to know which essay is generalized is easy to detect, by looking at question paper when you feel that you can write maximum on a particular data, this is gonna be generalized. Because others will think too in such a way. Beside that Descriptive essays are the ones chosen most.

When you are asked to give your opinion, this is called an argumentative essay, you have to justify the stance you have taken, this is very dangerous type but yields maximum score if your arguments are sound beside correct Engish.

You should be aware of your strengths and weaknesses.

I would like to give my own example,I'm poor at attempting essay that needs facts and figures so I always overlook such topics if they are in paper.

You should short list the topics that seem 'easy to attempt' to you.They may be four or even two.Then you should make a choice by keeping in mind that the topic must not be common one (like energy crisis)

The better way is to be mentally prepared before examination.If you are good at handling religious topic then your focus must be on collecting material on such topics but don't overlook other categories because you can't take risk.

You may short list categories beforehand.For example,I make my preference list here,

1-Literary topic
2-Media
3-Social Problem

In the same way you should make your preference list and prepare accordingly.
