The word "Deen" has been specifically used for Islam. As it is said in the Quran
"Deen to Allah k nazdeek Islam he hai" where as the word "mazhab" is used generally for any religion. |

Difference between "Deen" and Mazhab(religion).
Deen Vs. Mazhab The Difference between Deen and Religion is usually mistaken.. Since the topic is very important and the members of this Forum Need knowledge about the topic, I feel urged to clarify the Concept for the readers. The word “Deen” is used in a broader sense. Deen is a whole, while religion is the part of it. Islam is not Religion; it is Deen. The different features of the Two are given Blow: Mazhab (religion) 1. It is a branch. 2. It is man-made. . 3.Its teachings are just confined to a people. . It is rather for a particular community. 4.It is changeable. . 5.It is for limited time. 6 Religions are of different kinds. Examples: Hanafi, Maliki, Shafii etc Deen (Islam) 1. It is whole tree. 2. It is Divine. 3. It is Universal. It is not confined to a community. 4. It is Unchangeable 5. It is for all time (eternal). 6. It is of one Kind. Example: Islam. A question arises: How about Moses and Jesus Christ? Why did they bring Christianity, and Judaism?? Indeed, There is a misconception that Deen(Islam)started from Prophet Mohammad. Islam started with the teachings of Adam. Moses and Jesus Christ were preachers of Islam (Deen). Where has Allah said in Quran that Adam, Moses, Jesus etc were not Muslim???The Deen (Islam) that was started from Adam, got Completed in the Life of Mohammad (P.B.U.H). Allah says in Quran: This day I have perfected your religion(deen). (Al maeda: #3) In secular parlances, Christianity etc might be called Religions. But in religious sense they are different versions of Islam. Why Judaism and Christianity can’t be called religions in religious sense? It is because their Books (Injeel and Torah) were Divine revelations. They were not man-made. But why shouldn’t we follow Christianity and Judiasim now if the revealed books namely Injeel and Torat are Divine revelations?? We can’t follow them now. It is owing to two reasons. Firstly, those books were for limited time. Their time has expired. Secondly, those books were just for particular community. On the Other Hand, Quran is for all time. (Eternal), and it is also universal. It is guidance for all nations. Hence the latest and perfect version of Islam is Quran. But if anyone would follow others, it would not be acceptable to Allah. Allah says in Quran: “ Deen with Allah is Al-Islam.”(Al-Imran:# 19) Allah further says: And whoso ever sought as religion other than Islam, it will not be acceptable from him. (Al-Imran:#85). Another reasons why Bible( Injeel) and Torat , zabor are not acceptable is due to the fact that the followers of these books brought about changes in the original version after the Concerned prophets’Death. Allah says about them in Quran: “They change words from their contexts and forget a part of that where of they were admonished”. ( Sura Al- Maeda: # 13). Question arises: If Christianity, Judaism etc were version of Islam ( Deen), then what about Buddhism, Hinduism, and Sikhism. The answer is that there are only four revealed books mentioned in Quran. Others are not mentioned. Nor is there any mention that a prophet (Divine Help) was sent to them. Hence these faiths can be called religious philosophies and not Islam because in Quran we find no any clue. Thus in religious sense, Sunni schools of thoughts ( Hanafi, Maliki shafii and hanbali) and Shia schools would be called religions of Islam. But the word “Deen” is exlusively used for Islam as a whole. I hope now the Concept has been clarified. If you stand satisfied, appreciate this effort at least. Thanks…

Religion & Deen (Islam)
A comparative study of religion and Deen, should help us understand the vital and fundamental characteristics of each and the differences between the two: “Religion & Deen (Islam)”
Religion is merely some sort of subjective experience and is concerned only with the so-called private relationship between God and man. Deen is an objective reality and a system of collective life. Every follower of a Religion is satisfied that he has established a communion with the Almighty, and the objective of each individual is his own salvation. The aim of Deen on the other hand is the welfare and progress of all mankind, and the character and constitution of a society indicates whether or not it is founded upon the Divine Law. Religion does not afford us any objective. criterion by which we could determine whether or not our actions are producing the desired results. In a social order governed by Deen, the development of a collective and harmonious life correctly indicates whether or not the people are pursuing the right course. Religion is hostile to scientific investigation and is an adversary of reason, so that it could flourish unhampered with the aid of a blind faith. Deen helps in the development of human reason and knowledge, allows full freedom to accept or reject on the basis of reason and arguments, and encourages investigation and discovery of all the natural phenomena to illumine the path of human life and its advancement in the light of the Permanent Values.

Islam is solution for humanity
Deen and mazhab(religion) are some what interlinked to each other. I.e. what religion discusses deen does it but what deen explains religion limits it. That is one of the reasons that Islam is called as a Deen whereas Judaism, Christianity hinduism, Buddhism and other beliefs are considered to be a religion rather than Deen. One of the major reason that these are all considered as a religion because All of the things that are focused in them is focused on how strickly can some one maintain a relationship with God, without a practical and a rational explanation.
But Islam does it both rationaly and practically with beautiful explanation from Allah himself . Deen : deen is a complete solution to humanity, and so mahzab is included in deen. Deen discusses and gives Solutions to many problems that are discussed by the secular world. problems like social ,economical, political, judicial and all of the topics that are related to the humanity by law. Deen not only covers the subject of our relationship with God , but discusses how human beings interact each other with their cultural values . Religion: religion however discusses only the spiritual part. It discusses how a relationship between a man with God is created and maintained without affecting the social and cultural, political, economical values. Islam on the other hand is not a religion, but a complete deen .Islam not only covers the relationship of a man with its God but also discusses how the relationship between two or more human beings are maintained. Islam not only discusses the relationship with God but also discusses the subject of sociality, for e.g. relation of father with his son, mother with her daughter ,brother h with brothers and sisters with sister, brothers with sisters, daughter to a father a father with his daughter or even mother with his son and any kind relationship directly or in directly linked to each other. Islam also discusses how a political culture is developed and how a culture develops into civilization, is developed regarding with norms values and moral values many problems. I hope you get my point that I am trying to explain here. Quote:

"Mazhab" and "Deen" are two different implementations of Religion and the differences between them are significantly great.
"Mazhab" is only limited to the individual It is spiritual, NOT practical "Mazhab" stands for 'Gesticulation' or 'Worshiping', it as an act of physical performance, either in the form of prostration or some other form of mysticism, which is solely regarded as a personal act. Thus, "Mazhab" has made the access to Hell or Heaven a very effortless phenomena, for istance some practices claim that standing on your feet for 2 days or recitation of certain scriptures for 5000 times will make you eligible for Heaven while others would guarantee you a similar achievement on some other ridiculous acts. However, one simple yet important fact about "Mazhab" should be very clear here that it CAN NOT cope with time, people who believe in such practices never evolve and their existence becomes un-survivable. These believes are illogical and mythical, these just involve physical involvement i.e worshipping it doesn't encourage any changes in our social, emotional or even economical states. A good example of Mazhab would be Budhism, Jainism, Hinduism etc which all have something in common and that is that they achieve nothing for their well-being out of their practices similarly we've converted our religion into a analogous condition. Now on the other hand, "Deen" is something completely distinctive to Mazhab: “Deen” is logical and practical “Deen” has set of guide lines and laws based on which it evolves with time. These guidelines are well defined and must cater for the whole universe for all times. These guidelines are not for a specific society or a group, they are for the whole humanity. Islam is the only religion which fits perfectly and truly on this definition where Quran defines all the laws of humanity and is a guidance for the mankind, Islam is a social system and it clearly yet precisly teaches every human being on how this God-gifted life should be led. All Prophets sent by Allah, profoundly instructed their communities to follow Allah's Laws ("Mahkoomiyat") and not confuse it with human teachings [7/59, 11/50, 7/65, 29/16, 12/39, 11/84, 7/85]. However, Quranic verses describe that after every Prophet's departure their communities took the authority of the divine messages, made changes on their own will and formed man-made spiritual societies where they only restricted themselves to worshiping, forgot the message of establishing a divine system and indulged into activities which were purely shirk and revolved around their interests and needs. Following Allah’s “Deen” in reality is following His system, it’s not about individuality and self spiritual beliefs. According to Quran NO ONE can make direct contact with Allah, it has to be through his “Deen”. Characteristics of “Deen”: Quran uses word “Deen” for Islam. Good results and outcomes are promised by Allah for those who follow His system and establish it. [2:143] And, thus it is: We have appointed you a middle and just Community that you would be watchers over all mankind and that the Messenger be a witness against you. (It will be your sacred duty to ensure that no people on earth will oppress others). As far as the transformation of the Centre of devotion is concerned, it has distinguished between those who succumb to traditional and nationalistic preferences from those who see all mankind as one nation and follow the Messengers. And the Messengers have always fullfilled Allah's Command for the Unity of Mankind. In fact it was a hard test except for those who have attained Allah’s Guidance. Allah never lets your Faith go in vain. Verily, Allah is Compassionate and Merciful to all mankind. As Allah says that Islam is the only true “Deen” (which sadly is in its worst condition but InshahAllah will eventually prevail – but not magically or over night, we'll have to work hard to make it happen): [48:28] He it is Who has sent His Messenger with the Enlightenment and the Religion of Truth that He may cause it to prevail over all other systems of life. And Allah is Sufficient as Witness (to this Pronouncement (9:31-33), (14:48), (18:48), (48:28), (61:9)). You can not have sects or groups in “Deen”. Forming groups is "SHIRK" and HARAAM (prohibited). [30:31] Turn unto Him alone then, and be mindful of Him, and establish the Divine System and be not of the MUSHRIKEEN who ascribe authorities along with Him. (2:213) [3:105] Be not like those who separated and differed after the clear proofs of Truth had come to them. For such there is an awful doom since they cause divisions instead of unity. In Deen results are obvious and can be seen but in “Muzhab” they don’t exist. |
