Default Comparison b/w Political system of Islam and direct democracy?

Can anyone draw comparison between direct democracy (Switzerland for instance) and Political system of Islam? Why should Islamic political system be preferred (excluding the ''Cuz it's been instructed/practiced by religious teachings/figures'' - thing)?.. Because, from what we know, rule by the people and for the people is the one which is amendable by people of that state, and that adjusts to modernity, and all.

Help would be appreciated.

Thanks!
