There are two major approaches to IR namely Realism and Idealism(liberalism) and if both combined to get maximum advantage of situation is called Eclecticism... As currently U.S is dealing Arab Spring with Eclecticism. Dealing Libiya with realism and some other with idealism or liberalism....

This is what i know something about approaches... there are other approaches to IR also i.e. Feminism(IR) and English School of Thought etc....

these are asfollow:

traditional or classical
scientific
behaviouralists
realist
idealist
system theory ( general system theory)
there also neo liberal or neo realist
in exams the questions would be specific like discuss the neo liberal theory etc. or even discuss different approaches.

Approaches in INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS mean that how one sees at international system and develops a theory to describe it.For example realists see international system through lense of power politics in which every state tries to maxmize her natonal power and security.Simply these r theories of INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS that include:Idealism;Classical Realism and Neo Realism;Balance of power theory and complex interdependence and clash of civilisation.
