Maps are important only in questions where you have to describe a war scenario. like if the question is about malborough ...then you have to draw the map and explain how he wreaked havoc on his enemy ....for quotations ...if you look at the 2011 paper ,,then most of the questions required personal opinion of the student ...but still if you want quotes ...then norman lowe book provides relevant quotations ...
regarding critical analysis ...my personal opinion about it that it should be the crux of your answer. consider the case of Robert Peel. first read all about him ...and then read my critical analysis that i am going to describe....
"many people feel that robert peel was not an innovator , because most of the actions which he took were not because he wanted to take those actions , but because there was immense public pressure. although people criticize him for his reactive ,rather than preemptive policy .but i believe that this was his greatest strength. he was able to read the minds of people , he was able to see which way the wind blew and so he took the decision in the best interest of the people. if he remained obstinate and ignored wishes of the people . then he would not have been able to pass the corn laws or he would not have tabled the catholic emancipation bill. "

if i had to end the question about robert peel then i would have ended the question like this. so critical analysis , for me , is basically what you have understood about the personality of a person , or about a particular situation.
for that to happen . you must develop your thoughts about each and every person and situation.
like you have a personal opinion about zardari? right . you may think that he his corrupt or a saint or whatever. but why do you feel that way ? you have solid reasons to back your argument.

i hope i have been able to clear your confusions

regards

Keeping in view my two attempts with British history, I would strongly second the opinion of soloplayer. In my First attempt I didn't have Lowe's book.
The first paper went very good. But I was unable to do well for second paper.
In my 2011 attempt I took help from lowe along with Thomas. I felt myself much prepared. So, I would suggest one should consult Lowe's book for second paper along with Thomas.
