AMNA you are the resident of Kasur. i also belong to the same District. here are my adivce to you for being senior member of this forum.
i have done my master in Master in English literature with the distinction that i was awarded a gold medal for standing first. regardless of this backgroung i did not opt English literature for CSS as advised by a CSP Officer. i feel that it was a good decision of mine. i am waiting for my CSS result.
however, if you want to opt it then there are some ways to prepare.
1. if you have enough time to prepare, go through all the books.
2. if no enough time, just consult with the helping book as you read in Enlsigh literature.

my subjects were
1. european history (easy for candidates having english lit background) ---200
2.International Relations (european history supports it)--100
3. Journalism -------100
4. Sociology -------100
5. Punjabi ---------100

answer of your second question: if you have time, you can go through text as well otherwise leave it.

@amina

a.o.a
I cleared ppsc and i became a lecturer in English. I recently attempted CSS 2013 without opting Literature that turned out to be a wrong decision as the papers of sociology and I.R were difficult to handle. My cousin is a CSP and he advised to me opt English literature. A subject is scoring if you are good at it & if u believe u can do well in Literature and u have a natural aptitude of it, u should prepare it and in css one needs to prepare optional subjects to the level of masters.
U SHOULD FIRST READ WIKIPEDIA OF THE PARTICULAR WRITER, e.g if you are going to read William Blake, first of all read his life history, the socio-political backround of his era. Then start reading the text of the author. Paper A revolves around general questions where as B includes particular works e.g Hamlet, Pygmalion etc.

yes paper A seems more technical than paper B as it includes general information about literature.
so what should be the " strategy " to deal with paper A as prescribed writer's works are large in number?
can comprehensive study of 2 books of each writer can help us pass the exam?
AND ALSO REFER TO IMPORTANT BOOKS OF WRITERS ONE SHOULD STUDY.

THANX
