i had been studying arabic since 2010 june and i was expecting atleast 150 marks since i had consulted a nicholson, muhammad kazim and ahmad hassan zayat, revised whole syllabus several times, but i got 125 in arabic. no doubt there are students who have crossed 140 in 2012
a lot of hard work and cramming is required for arabic. before selecting arabic i would suggest you to make a comparison with persian which is an equally scoring subject but far less students opt persian

I second you.Arabic hasn't been much scoring this time around. The possible reason may be increasing number of aspirants opting this subject.

Despite one of the easiest papers I have ever seen of the subject,
It hasn't given scores for which it is known.
While last year despite one of it's toughest paper , I got 140'

I am Shahid Manzoor, Telecommunication Engineer, Briefly a CSS aspirant for CE 2014. I am facing some uncertainty in subject selection as every aspirant does. I have heard from so many experienced people that Arabic helps to fetch good marks. However, I have not any educational background regarding Arabic. But on the other side I am good at comprehending languages by general aptitude inherited from my father who is very comfortable with chemistry of different languages i.e Urdu, Persian and Arabic. I seek guidance about scoring trend and pattern of the Arabic paper in CSS. How much time it takes to prepare completely? Any special advantage it has when compared with Urdu, Indo Pak History, Islamic History and Geography ?
My other Optional Subjects are Public Administration, Punjabi, Sociology and Journalism. please also comment on these.

expecting your reply !
