yes u r rite CFC but in my opinion he should go for academy prep cz it will help him to enhance his abilities accordingly..

Well if you are capable enough to make notes and to search the relevant material then it's really not necessary to join an academy.
But if you have less time to search yourself all the stuff and you think that you can't do it on your own than go for academy.

In my point of view self study is best with little guidance (which this forum can give you too),you learn more..you excel more and that's the point basically
