http://www.sociology.org.uk/mpop.htm The Hawthorne effect refers to a phenomenon which is thought to occur when people observed during a research study temporarily change their behavior or performance (this can also be referred to as demand characteristics). Others have broadened the definition to mean that people’s behavior and performance change following any new or increased attention. The Hawthorne studies have had a dramatic effect on management in organizations and understanding the impact of different factors in the workplace. http://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/...wthorne_effect

Each time a particular environmental factor was changed, Mayo measured any resulting changes in worker productivity over time. However, what Mayo discovered was that, no-matter what the environmental conditions, worker productivity always seemed to increase...
At least two possible explanations could be used to account for this: 1. That environmental conditions make little difference to the way in which people work. 2. The presence of the observer (and the knowledge they were being watched) changed the behaviour of the workers... Last Island: You are very right. Thanks for your concern
