Question number 5 was taken from this website

Sana Rasool Thursday, February 18, 2016 07:59 PM

My paper solution

Q1. I am expecting somewhere between 10 and 15.

Q2. Precis was taken from a website for online preparation. I can't post the link here due to low number of total posts but if you search it online you can find complete solved precis with title.

Q3. Comprehension was straightforward except the last question. Didn't know peril, repel and barb

Q4. a) Solution: (please check if correct)

ii. She recommended that I take a few days off from work.
iii. I tried to explain to him the problem but he had difficulty understanding me.
iv. "I'll do the grocery shopping for you grandma", Lucy said.
vi. I don't know why you didn't go. If I were you, I would have gone.
vii. Kevin says he stopped travelling internationally because of his family.

Q4 b)

i. " before Coach
ii. comma (,) after Patricia
iii. colon : after flowers
iv. semi-colon ; after gymnast
v. comma (,) after senior

Q5 a)

iii. b
v. a
vii. a
iv. d
viii. d

Q5 b)
Disaster

Q6 a)

attempted i, ii, iii, vi and vii
I knew all of them but I'm not sure if I'd get marks for a descent sentence or not.

Q6 b)
I knew four.
smash hit
go banana
groan inwardly
chicken out

Not sure if good sentences.

Q7
random, word-to-word translation. Not good for a competitive exam.

PS: I messed the essay paper as usual.

sameer chaudhry Thursday, February 18, 2016 08:07 PM

Brother in this solution he used "we" again and again. But in CSS exam if you ll use word "we" in précis it will be disastrous.

Author in this case..... In other cases you can use 'ones' instead of I and we. I have committed this mistake during my practice about six months ago. My teacher, Sir Manzoor Mirza cross the précis and said now you ll remember the consequences of using word we or I. Well, vocab part was difficult. I am searching for those 20 mcqs

I used "She" one time instead of author. I dont know why I wrote this.Anyhow, title was little awkward "Beauty in Orokhee".:waiting

Uzair Awan Thursday, February 18, 2016 10:00 PM

They didn't mentioned analogy type questions in the syllabus.
Secondly what about indirect speech.
It was a difficult paper as compared to previous ones.
Best of Luck

shaemureed Thursday, February 18, 2016 10:02 PM

The easiest paper!

The easiest paper in css history. Repent over not appearing this time.
See the translation!
Common man thinks that the laws of country and indivisual freedom are opposit to each other. Apparently this does not seems wrong. Every law has some restrictions to citizens in different form. The more are the laws of a country the the higher are the collective restrictions. The indivisual liberty gets pressed due to more restrictions. In opposit to it, the circle of indivisual freem gets broader if the number of laws are reduced.

Paragraph

"what happend to john? " asked Helena to West. "he left the company" was the answer from West. "he asked me for a rise but I didnt give to him" said West. "why didnt you gave him rise?" inquired Helen. West replied "he was so lazy". Helen further asked "has he found another job?". "yes, he is working in a film company"answered West. Helen continued asking "what is his salary like?" "I think he earns quite alot" was the answer from West. "does he like the new job? " continued Helen. West responded " i dont know"

Correction would be respected. Best of luck to all who appeared!

"I", "we", these are first persons. Generally, they should be avoided while writing Precis. However, a precis written in first person is not wrong per se. There are varying opinions regarding this. For example, Richard Palmer, author of "Write in Style", mentions in his book that writing in first person is actually preferred in his opinion as it maintains clarity. Similarly, Exploring the World of English also allows writing precis in first person at least at one place.

That being said, it is always preferred to write precis in third person as this is the standard manner. Nonetheless, if the text is validly paraphrased and all the points have been inculcated, there are good chances that the examiner will not discard the precis solely on this rather disputed technical point.

in precis we can use "we" or "someone" or "some school of thought" or "the author" or "the describer" but never use "I"
