Default The aftermath, editorial

Thursday, July 29, 2010
Thin smoke was still visible at the site of the crash of the Airblue Airbus A321 late on Wednesday afternoon. The aircraft appeared to have made a 'controlled flight into terrain' (CFIT) impacting on a near-vertical cliff and killing all 152 people on board. Eyewitnesses spoke of the aircraft flying very low and going north on a path they had never seen aircraft fly before. The crash site is densely wooded and difficult to access and it will take days to retrieve all of the bodies and longer to get the wreckage down to a place where it can be examined. Despite the difficulties and because of the proximity to Islamabad and Rawalpindi it was possible to get rescue services on-site fairly quickly, but it was obvious that this was a non-survivable incident and it is something of a puzzle as to where early reports of as many as five survivors came from. Also quick on the scene were the media and footage was being aired by midday not just of the crash site, but of grieving relatives who had been waiting at Islamabad airport.

It is far too early to point to a definitive cause of this terrible tragedy, and we will have to await the report of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). Questions such as if the flight appropriately cleared for take-off from Karachi when local conditions at Islamabad were very poor need to be answered. Were standard operating procedures (SOPs) followed by both pilot and ground control relative to an aborted landing and a 'go around'? Why was the aircraft flying north and not south and at such a low altitude? Was the pilot – a retired PIA officer aged 65 – fit for duty? Did the aircraft have a good safety and maintenance record? Answers to all these questions lie in the future – or maybe they do not. It will be recalled that a PIA Fokker F27 crashed at Multan in the summer of 2006 killing 45 people. The CAA report on the crash has yet to find its way into the public domain, and there are strong suspicions voiced on aviation websites and technical forums that the reason for this is that to publish the report would open the door for relatives of the deceased at Multan to begin litigation. We need to know, and as quickly as possible, why 152 people died in a 'young' aircraft on a misty rainy morning in the hills above Islamabad. We have no interest in face-saving cover-ups or mealy-mouthed obfuscation. And it would be a considerable service to the relatives of the dead in the Multan crash if the report on that incident was published, and fast, as well.

I think Pilot was responsible for this deadly crash...according to some reports he was the victim of depression and agression...tough schedule of pilots is a major cause for such mental behaviour...
Regards

Dear its premature to put all blame on pilot. Let the inquiry report make public first then raise ur fingers against any body.

No offense intended

yes you are right by saying that..we cannot say exact thing before proper inquiry of this incident...the person who warned the pilot from the control room should come forward to clear the situation..

Every minute thing will be as clear as crystal if black box is found. So keep your fingers crossed. May Allah help them to unveil this mystery.

What will happen if Black box found .???People lost their precious lives..that can not be reversed now ......Inquiry commission would be placed, reports would be published , authorities will express their sympathies and regrets ,and people will gradually forget it .Thats it....Thats all gonna happen because that is what normally happens in this country after undesirable events--like this tragedy, occur....

We can't reverse that action but at least we can stop its repetition. We can't put life in dead bodies but we can safeguard live bodies in future. Nothing is less important. Past experiences teach us to adopt or avoid something for betterment. So authentic investigation reports are mandatory for corrective action at present and defensive action for unforeseen future.

Agreed that investigation must be carried out to avoid any future eventuality but that never happens in our beloved country. Here the common practice is to place high profile committees, appoint investigatory teams and publish reports. After that pledges are made to avoid similar mishaps in future .But untoward incidents happen again and again ...

So it is a routine practice in Pakistan to appoint a commission and then forget about it.........at least nothing has happened in the past after such reports were published .....lets hope things would get better in the future.........

Regards

What Unfortunate Plane Was Doing in Islamabad?

In the past, whenever Pakistani planes have met unfortunate ends like the accidents of Multan, Bahawalpur, Kathmundo, or the plane of Mushaf Mir, never the public managed to know what actually happened. The black box is still not found, and things are very murky and there are many unanswered question.

In the Margalla Hills, there are many anti aircraft guns and it is highly no fly zone and a red area. The weather was bad, but then that is no unusual for the Islamabad. Was it some sort of mistake? Nothing is final and cannot be said until the final facts appear, but no angle should be spared from investigation.

Pakistan’s aviation system is normally very good. Pilots are very well trained. The pilot of the crashed Airblue plane was very experienced and knew this trail very well. There should also be attention on the wind share and about any confusion in the mind of the pilot. It might be that it could be the fault of the radar operator or the control tower management.

The parliament house, supreme court, president house, diplomatic enclave and many other sensitive buildings are just yards away from where the crash has occurred. That direction of the plane is very strange. Because the strip of the Benazir Bhutto airport is in opposite direction. If a plane is coming from Karachi it comes from the Karal chowk and lands into the strip, but if it doesn’t it goes straight over it, and flies over the Rawalpindi city towards the Taxila end of Margalla Hills, but the place where plane has crashed is 90 degree opposite.

This is a reminder that airport must be shifted now from this location. Airport should be shifted from the dense Rawalpindi city, because there are many problems at the current location. There are birds flying in the air over airport because there are garbage dumps around airport. It is security risk because it is surrounded by sensitive buildings, and also the space is very scarce in the airport.
