US midterm election results: live updates

• Republicans sweep control of House of Representatives
• Democrats cling on to Senate
• Alaska, Washington and Colorado Senate results to come
• Proposition 19 to legalise marijuana defeated in California

7.30am GMT / 3.30am ET: Good morning. The bulk of the midterm election results are in, so here is a quick catch-up for anyone who hasn't been awake for the last eight hours.

The Republicans won control of the House of Representatives All 435 seats were up for election and the Republicans took at least 60 from the Democrats, surpassing the 52 it won when Bill Clinton took a midterms drubbing in 1994. There are around 30 results still to come.

Democrats held enough seats to keep the Senate Wins in West Virginia and Nevada, where Democratic Senate leader Harry Reid held off the Tea Party's Sharron Angle, denied the Republicans a full sweep of Congress – but the Democrats failed to make any pick-ups and at the time of writing the party has lost six seats.

Tea Party candidates will be heading to Washington DC Alongside new members of the House of Representatives, Marc Rubio in Florida, Rand Paul in Kentucky and Mike Lee in Utah will be joining uber-conservative Jim DeMint of South Carolina in the Senate.

... But none from Delaware Christine O'Donnell lost the Senate race (no surprise there) and appears to have dragged the Republicans down to defeat in the battle for Delaware's sole House seat. But since they are looking at 60+ gains in the House elsewhere they can probably live with that.

Republicans won at least 10 new governors The most significant is likely to be John Kasich, who took Ohio from the Democrats' Ted Strickland and could give the Republicans a 2012 campaigning advantage in this perennial swing state. Elsewhere, Meg Whitman's $140m spend of her own money failed to make her California governor and Republican Nikki Haley in South Carolina chalked up a governor's mansion for the Tea Party.

Nikki Haley is the First Indian American women governor in the history of US for the state of South Carolina and Bobby Jindal was the first American Indian man who become governor of state of Louisiana in US history.

Are there any changes expected to Pakistan? Republicans have other thoughts for PAK-Afghan issues and they have quite fair policies towards India.

It has been observed that Republicans have traditionally maintained a favourable stance towards Pakistan, as opposed to Democrats pro-Indian. But again, these aspects are meaningless for what we have seen that USA follows a 'State' policy which is to befriend India and keep Pakistan under leash to extract the maximum. This state policy continues irrespective of who occupies which house. Their policies do not change with incoming personalities or with change in electoral balance.

US behaviour towards pakistan will become more sensitive and they will seek help and cooperation from pakistan in withdrawing their forces from afghanistan. For that they definitenly have to help pakistan financialy and morally.
Main cause of change in electoral balance is the promises made with people towards economic growth and to withdraw forces from Afghanistan, as the US economy is worstly affected due to this continous war which is now clear that will not give any fruits. So spending $3.6 billion a month in afghan will be of no avail.
And the killings of US soldiers in afghanistan is also not acceptable to any US national.
For these reasons, withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan, safely and respectably is necessary and they have announced to withdraw by july 2011. Which I believe is not possible till said date. Anyhow, US pressure on Pakistan is now going to decrease as Pakistan had beared it for 9-10 years and is enough. They have to help pakistan now for their own survival in post-US afghanistan. In this regard, the meeting of Karzai with top most key Taliban leaders held few days back in Kabil was important and interestingly these three taliban leaders were taken to kabul from peshawar and then back, in a special helicopter.
On the other hand, US pressure on pakistan to conduct N-Waziristan operation also demands financial help and a message is given from pakistan side to US that they need resources and aid to do so.
The whole scenario will be of great importance and beneficial for Pakistan in future. Pakistan is the only ally of US to help him in post-US Afghan. In this respect, US will also seek help from Iran, as the US president said we will welcome the role of Iran in Afghanistan and for this the US pressure on Iran will also decrease as US flies back from Afghan. China on the other side will not play any vital role and will not interfere. India will be more concerened and feared about this situation. India will be left alone and will have to close its embassies in Afghanistan after US leaves.
So, the most vital role will be played by Pakistan and ISI who will definitely help taliban leaders in Afghanistan. US policies towards pakistan will be of more importance and they will have to help pakistan for their own honorable withdrawal instead of impelling more pressure on Pakistan.

With Republicans controlling the House of Representatives, the Obama administration will find it far more difficult to pass legislation without significant compromises. For Pakistanis, this could mean further delays and conditions attached to the military and civilian aid packages whose delivery they await from Washington. For Americans, it means a government caught in gridlock with neither Democrats nor Republicans able to deliver the elusive change that they both promise.

Pakistan is majorly concerned with the $2 Billion Military Aid which can be hampered by the recent turn out of events in USA. With Republicans being able to get a fairly large chunk of the cake in the Senate, they can create hurdles in passing out this bill, which needs to be ratified by the Senate.

On the other hand, we should keep in mind that the President is majorly concerned with the foreign policy, so we should not fear any major shift in US's foreign policy.

The Republicans want the US forces to stay put in Afghanistan, against what the Democrats and Obama say about exit. It is Republics who brought this war in Afghanistan in Bush era and they considered it right to continue to fight this war, unless they 'win'.

There was a news item in the newspaper today as well referring to this stance of Republicans. Here you go:
---

Republicans want troops in Afghanistan to stay
WASHINGTON: Republican lawmakers who now control the US House of Representatives said on Thursday that they would try to prevent President Barack Obama from withdrawing American troops from Afghanistan as he planned.

Congressman Buck McKeon, who will now take over the House Armed Services Committee from the Democrats, has also announced his party’s plan for Afghanistan and Iraq. He said that under the Republicans the committee’s top priority would be to continue the US military presence in Afghanistan. Mr McKeon pledged to work directly with Gen David Petraeus, the US commander in Afghanistan, to commit more equipment and resources to the war effort.

“America remains a nation at war,” Mr McKeon said in a statement. “More than 150,000 of our sons and daughters are deployed around the globe in the fight against Al Qaeda and its terrorist allies. The top priority of the Armed Services Committee will be to provide those brave fighters the resources and support they need to succeed in their missions and return home safely.”

He announced a three-point Republican defence policy: “Ensuring our troops deployed in Afghanistan, Iraq and around the world have the equipment, resources, authorities, training, and time they need to successfully complete their missions and return home; building on the Armed Services Committee’s strong bipartisan tradition of providing our fighters and their families with the resources and support they need; and, investing in the capabilities and force structure needed to protect the United States from tomorrow’s threats, while mandating fiscal responsibility, accountability, and transparency from the Department of Defence.”

The Republicans also vowed to adopt a National Defence Authorisation Act for Fiscal Year 2011 to provide more funds for US troops.

Upon taking office in 2009, President Obama quickly established Afghanistan as his war, dramatically escalating the US presence there. The Republicans strongly supported him on the issue but disagreed with a plan he announced later to start a gradual withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan from July 2011.

“You cannot tell the enemy when you’re leaving, when you’re in warfare, and expect your strategy to prevail,” said Senator John McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential candidate.

In Tuesday’s midterm elections, the Republicans captured 243 out of 435 seats while 192 went to the Democrats. The Republicans increased their strength in the Senate too, seizing 47 seats.

Although the Democrats maintained their majority in the 100-seat Senate by retaining 52 seats, they did so because only 37 seats were up for election.
