Wikileaks founder Julian Assange refused bail

The founder of whistle-blowing website Wikileaks, Julian Assange, has been refused bail by a court in London but vowed to fight extradition to Sweden.

Mr Assange denies sexually assaulting two women in Sweden. He was remanded in custody pending a hearing next week. A judge at City of Westminster Magistrates' Court refused bail because of the risk of the 39-year-old fleeing.A Wikileaks spokesman said the arrest was an attack on media freedom and pledged to continue publishing.
After the court appearance Mr Assange's lawyer Mark Stephens said he would be applying again for bail.He also claimed the charges were "politically motivated" and he said the judge was keen to see the evidence against Mr Assange, an Australian citizen.
Mr Stephens also said Wikileaks would continue to publish material and added: "We are on cable 301 and there are 250,000 secret cables."
A Downing Street spokesman said Mr Assange's arrest was "a matter for the police" and there had been no ministerial involvement.

Mirza blames ‘city’s biggest party’ for target killings

Updated at: 1728 PST, Monday, December 13, 2010
KARACHI: Sindh Home Minister Dr. Zulfiqar Mirza Monday said that target killers belong to the biggest party of Karachi, Geo News reported.

In his address at Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), Dr. Zulfiqar Mirza recalled: “Dr. Imran Farooq was assassinated in London and shops were forced to shut down in Karachi.”

He said Pathans, Punjabis, Balochis and Sindhis are being hunted down in the metropolis. “If people from all these communities joined hands and repulsed, a large number of innocent Urdu speaking people would be killed,” he warned.

Dr. Mizra questioned; “Was it (ANP Chief) Asfandyar Wali who killed Dr. Imran Farooq in London that Pathans are being targeted here in reaction?”

He alleged that different associations of traders and businessmen give extortion money besides Zakat to ‘Taliban’. “We don’t have funds to purchase motor cycles for Police, why don’t you businessmen of the city buy Police vehicles?”

The Sindh Home Minister in his typical aggressive tone went on to say that animal hides are snatched at gunpoint in the city. “What book preaches such a lesson?” he asked.

He said 60 people involved in target killings had been arrested in Karachi and alleged that ‘the killers belonged to the biggest party of Karachi’.

Dr. Zulfiqar Mirza told the gathering that a man had been held hostage and later released on payment of ransom in Liaquatabad. We had, in an action, recovered a large cache of arms from there and found a sector incharge involved in the crime, he added.

He said Karachi is everyone’s city and all the political parties are responsible for the situation it faced with. “Ducking down the head like an ostrich would be of no use in saving the neck,” he added, urging, the businessmen to spare themselves from being politically exploited.

Peshawar grenade attack kills one, wounds dozens

PESHAWAR: A grenade attack killed one child and wounded 28 people, including women and children, at a Muharram procession Thursday on the eve of Ashura in Peshawar, reported Express 24/7 correspondent Iftikhar Firdous.

“Twenty-five injured were brought to our hospital. There are women and children among them. One child is in a serious condition,” said Abdul Hamid Afridi, head of the city’s Lady Reading Hospital.

According to Express 24/7 correspondent Omar Farooq, three of the injured, including one child, were in critical conditions when they were brought into Lady Reading Hospital.

“It was a grenade attack,” Peshawar administration chief Mohammad Siraj told AFP, adding that police had failed to arrest the culprit.

Iftikhar Firdous reported that according to eye witness accounts, the grenade was thrown from inside one of the houses. However, the the area where the procession was passing through had been for the past week and only those authorised were able to enter the vicinity.

This was one of the procession that was meant to join with the main procession of the city at Qissa Khwani Bazaar.

After the incident took place, the police immediately took steps to keep the crowd from turning violent in order to start a search operation immediately.

Last year the Taliban claimed responsibility for a suicide attack that killed 43 people in a procession in Karachi on Ashura, in one of the deadliest single sectarian-linked attacks.

End of live updates

5:55pm

Iftikhar Firdous reports that the access to this area had been blocked a week back and only those who had ID cards for the area were allowed here.

According to eye witnesses the grenade was hurled from one of the houses in the region.

Sixteen people were injured who have been taken to the hospital.

5:52pm

According to Express 24/7 correspondent Iftikhar Firdous, the official authorities are saying that the explosion took place as a result of a grenade attack. It has not been determined where the grenade was hurled from as yet.

The police has cordoned off the hospital where the injured are being taken.

This was one of the processions that was supposed to join the main procession at the Qissa Khwani Bazaar.

The police is trying to calm the crowd in the procession so the situation does not turn violent and so they can start a search operation immediately.

5:47 pm

Omar Farooq, reporting for Express 24/7, says three of the injured, including a child, are are in critical condition.

5:44pm

Initial reports indicate that 15 people including women and children have been injured in the explosion.

According to Express News correspondent Jehangir Shehzad, the injured have been shifted to Lady Reading Hospital.

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange freed on bail

The founder of whistle-blowing website Wikileaks, Julian Assange, has vowed "to continue my work and to protest my innocence" after being freed on bail.
The 39-year-old was granted bail two days ago but prosecutors objected.
He is fighting extradition to Sweden over sex assault allegations made by two women. He denies any wrongdoing.
Mr Justice Ouseley ordered Mr Assange be released on payment of £240,000 in cash and sureties and on condition he resides at an address in East Anglia.

Speaking on the steps of the High Court to dozens of journalists, Mr Assange said: "It's great to feel the fresh air of London again."

He went on to thank "all the people around the world who had faith" in him, his lawyers for putting up a "brave and ultimately successful fight", people who provided money in the face of "great difficulty and aversion", members of the press and the British justice system.
"If justice is not always an outcome, at least it is not dead yet," he added."I hope to continue my work and continue to protest my innocence in this matter and to reveal as we get it, which we have not yet, the evidence from these allegations." Mr Assange had spent the past eight nights in prison.

He will now stay at a manor home on the Norfolk-Suffolk border owned by Vaughan Smith, a Wikileaks-supporting journalist and owner of the Frontline Club in London.

Unhappy

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Interior, Rehman Malik told the National Assembly on Monday that there was reportedly 1.6 million Riyals corruption made in Hajj arrangements during the current season.

He said that on the directives of Interior Ministry, several accused, including former DG Hajj Rao Shakeel had been arrested and investigation was going on, details of which would be provided to the parliament soon.

He, however, highlighted the importance of improving Hajj policy for which the Ministry of Interior would indicate grey areas where there were chances of corruption.

He said that there was a need to keep check on agents, who only operate during Hajj season.

He said that the ministry had launched an anti-corruption campaign and sacked several officers for their involvement in corruption adding that the ministry would keep on informing the parliament about its progress.

Terming the Transparency International's survey as substandard, he said that its recent report which ranked Pakistan at 34th place was not based on facts adding that 34.5 percent of the information was taken from a single channel out of which 98 percent was based on lies.

He said that the reports should not be made on gossips adding that "investors have run away as they consider us corrupt".

Replying to the observations made by Chaudhry Nisar, Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly regarding US interference in Pakistan's national matters, Malik urged the House to constitute a committee to frame rules and regulations for dealing and working with foreigners.

About Umar Cheema, a journalist, he said that a report regarding his torture would be put before the parliament in next session.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani termed the passage of 19th Amendment Bill a `very big decision' of the Parliament that reflected that the government had respected the judiciary.

Speaking in the National Assembly on Tuesday, the Prime Minister said the bill would pave the way for future legislators to avert any clash of institutions. It underscored that each institution must pay respect to the other, the PM added.

Gilani hailed the tremendous efforts of Constitutional Reforms Committee, and sought highest civil award for its members for their meritorious services vis a vis passage of the 19 Amendment Bill. "We have proved that we respect the judiciary", he maintained.

Prime Minister said the Parliament had proved that it had materialized the vision of its founding father, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who propounded parliamentary form of government in Pakistan.

He recalled various past amendments incorporated in 1973 Constitution, which were primarily meant either to protect or perpetuate the tenure of a single individual, but it was for the first time that the current parliament had strengthened the Constitution and institutions.

Gilani said the parliament and all political leadership through their political sagacity had misspelled the prevailing impression as if Parliament and Judiciary could not go together. "This vision has been accepted by the nation", he said.
