Default Aeroplane crash

Reporting from Islamabad — A Pakistani passenger jet with 152 people aboard crashed Wednesday in a forested ridge outside Pakistan's capital, Islamabad. It was not known whether there were any survivors.

The Airblue airliner, on its way from Karachi to the capital, had been flying through heavy fog and rain when it lost contact with air traffic control and crashed about 10 a.m. local time in the Margalla Hills region, authorities said.

Rescuers were trying to reach the scene amid heavy rain and difficult roads.

Pervaiz George, spokesman for the Pakistani Civil Aviation Authority, said there were 146 passengers and six crew members aboard.

Mohammed Usman, an official at Benazir Bhutto International Airport, said dozens of relatives of passengers gathered there were crying and desperate to get information about their loved ones.

Saqlain Altaf told Pakistan's ARY news channel that he was on a family outing in the hills when he saw the plane, looking unsteady in the air.

"The plane had lost balance, and then we saw it going down," he said, adding that he heard the crash.

Television footage of the crash site showed smoke and burning debris strewn in a swath cutting through the forest. Rescue helicopters hovered overhead. Fire was visible, and smoke was blowing up from the scene.

Authorities said the flight had originated in Turkey and was on its way to Islamabad via Karachi, Pakistan's largest city. Officials had not determined the cause of the crash.

At least 25 killed in passenger plane crash in Islamabad

Wednesday, 28 Jul, 2010

ISLAMABAD: Rescue workers have recovered the dead bodies of at least 25 people from the wreckage of an Airblue passenger plane which crashed in the Margalla Hills in Islamabad on Wednesday, an official said.

“So far, rescue people have recovered at least 25 dead bodies,” Ramzan Sajid, a spokesman for Islamabad's Capital Development Authority (CDA), told Reuters.

At least 157 people were on board the ABQ-202, a civil aviation official said. The 157 included 151 passengers and six crew members, the official said. To view the passenger list, click here.

Rescue workers arrived at the scene and managed to pull out four injured passengers from under the rubble. Meanwhile, the plane’s black box was also recovered, the Civil Aviation Authority said.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik said five injured people were recovered from the site and were rushed to a hospital for treatment.

Earlier, Imtiaz Inayat, a senior Islamabad municipal official, told a private television channel that up to five bodies had been recovered from the site of the crash. “Several bodies are lying in the area. Four or five bodies have been taken,” Inayat said.

Separately, Imtiaz Elahi, chairman of the Capital Development Authority, said: We have sent fire engines to the site, so far five dead bodies have been recovered.

The total number of survivors was not immediately known, another local administration official said. “Rescue teams have reached the area. They are fully equipped. They are scanning the entire area. Those wounded or survivors are being provided assistance and arrangements have been made to take them to hospitals.

“We are trying to get details about the passengers. It's a big tragedy. It's really a big tragedy,” he said. Mubarik Shah, a spokesman for the Civil Aviation Authority, said: We are gathering information. We have no more details.

However, a rescue team that accessed the wreckage of the crashed saw no sign of survivors, a rescue official said. “I along with four other police and rescue officials reached the crash site. The debris of the plane was scattered there in raging fire. The plane had struck a ridge which fell on the wreckage,” official Arshad Javed said.

“All we could see were charred hands or feet. I collected two heads, two legs and two hands in a bag." The plane was flying from Karachi to Islamabad and the exact cause of the crash was not immediately clear.

The aircraft had lost contact with the control tower during the crash which occurred amid thick fog and heavy rainfall in Islamabad.

Guards with the forestry service said they had found some wreckage and seen some bodies, police official Mohammad Saeed said. The army said it was sending special troops to the area to help out along with helicopters.

At the Benazir Bhutto International Airport, hundreds of friends and relatives of those on board the flight swarmed ticket counters desperately seeking information. A large cluster of people also surrounded the list of passengers on the flight, which was posted near the Airblue ticket counter.

''Nobody is guiding anyone. People are running from one counter to another,'' said Arshad Mahmood, whose brother, Maulana Nawabul Hasan, a prayer leader in a town near Islamabad, was on the flight.

One Saqlain Altaf told a private television news channel that he was on a family outing in the hills when he saw the plane, looking unsteady in the air.

''The plane had lost balance, and then we saw it going down,'' he said, adding he heard the crash.

Thick clouds of smoke were rising from the Margalla Hills. Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani ordered authorities to control the fire immediately and rescue passengers. The government declared a day of national mourning and called off a cabinet meeting that was scheduled for today.

Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and the cabinet “expressed grief and sorrow over the tragic incident” and offered prayers for passengers who were killed, Gilani's office said in a statement. Raheel Ahmed, a spokesman for Airblue, said an investigation would be launched, but that for now the focus was to find survivors. The plane was no more than eight years old, and it had no known technical issues, Ahmed said. He added that to his knowledge, the pilots had not sent any emergency signals.

Airblue flies within Pakistan as well as internationally to the United Arab Emirates, Oman and the United Kingdom.

The only previous recorded accident for Airblue, a carrier that began flying in 2004, was a tailstrike in May 2008 at Quetta airport by one of the airline's Airbus 321 jets.

There were no casualties and damage was minimal, according to the US-based Aviation Safety Network.

The airliner began operations in 2004 with a fleet of Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft, the company said on its website.

The plane that crashed on Wednesday was also built by Airbus, the European planemaker said.

“We regret to confirm there has been an accident with an Airbus aircraft and we will provide more information when we have more confirmed data available,” Airbus spokesman Stefan Schaffrath said.

According to the latest available data published by Airbus, Airblue operates six aircraft from its A320 family of short-haul and medium-haul aircraft seating up to 185 passengers.

Forty-five people were killed when a passenger plane belonging to Pakistan International Airlines crashed near Multan in 2006.

A commercial airliner carrying 150 people crashed in a ball of flames on Wednesday into densely wooded hills above Islamabad during heavy rain and poor visibility, leaving little hope of survivors.

Rescue officials said pieces of charred flesh and body parts were littered around the smouldering wreckage, partially buried on a remote hillside following Pakistan's first major aviation accident in four years.

Private airline Airblue's flight 202 from Karachi was coming into land at Islamabad's Benazir Bhutto International airport when witnesses saw a jet flying at unusually low altitude before hearing a loud boom.

The plane plummeted in a gorge between two hills, enveloped in cloud and some distance from the road, severely hampering rescue efforts and limiting visibility for helicopters hovering overhead, said an AFP correspondent.

"I saw a big ball of smoke and fire everywhere with big pieces of aircraft rolling down the hill," said police official Haji Taj Gul.

"The plane was flying very low. Then we heard a loud noise," Wajih-ur Rehman, a resident of the smart E-7 neighbourhood in the foothills of the Margalla Hills, told AFP.

Rescue workers have recovered the remains of around 90 people from the wreckage, a city official said.

"We have so far recovered around 90 bodies. They include bodies and parts," Islamabad administration chief Imtiaz Inayat told AFP.

"There are no reports of survivors. Initial reports about five (survivors) have not been confirmed so far," he added.

Rescue official Arshad Javed told AFP: "All we could see were charred hands or feet. I collected two heads, two legs and two hands in a bag.

"There were 150 people on board but no survivor was found. We shouted if anyone was there alive, but heard no voice," he said, returning from the site with four other police and rescue officials.

"The debris of the plane was scattered there in raging fire," Javed said.

"The wreckage of the plane is buried under the debris. First machines have to be deployed there to remove debris of the hill and then we can reach to pull out bodies or survivors -- if any," he told AFP.

Pakistan declared a day of national mourning and called off a cabinet meeting as Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani "expressed grief" over the "tragic incident" and offered prayers for those who had been killed.

Other rescue workers also said there were no apparent signs of survivors, saying that reports from the scene all spoke of body parts.

Anguished families were in tears after hearing of the disaster while waiting at the arrivals terminal where they had intended to meet their relatives.

"We cannot explain our agony, we don't know if he is alive," said Bilal Haider. He said he had come to collect his younger brother Abbas, who went to Karachi for a job interview after getting a Masters in business administration.

"Had we known that this is going to happen, we would never have sent him," Haider told AFP.

Airblue spokesman Raheel Ahmed told AFP the Airbus 321 took off from Karachi bound for Islamabad before 8:00 am (0300 GMT) with 144 passengers and six crew members on board.

A spokesman for the civil aviation authority said 152 people were on board.

"Apparently the cause of the crash is bad weather, but we leave that to the investigators," Ahmed told AFP.

Ambulances queued along the nearest road and anxious crowds gathered on the approach to the Margalla Hills while dozens of soldiers, paramilitary troops and rescue workers walked painstakingly uphill to reach the site.

Flames and smoke continued to spew from the wreckage hours later.

"It's a big tragedy. It's really a big tragedy," Interior Minister Rehman Malik told media. State television read out the passenger list. No foreigners were believed to be among the dead.

Airblue is one of Pakistan's most respected airlines. It has been operating only since 2004, using new Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft on domestic routes and international services to Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Muscat and Manchester.

Updated at: 1818 PST, Monday, August 02, 2010
KARACHI: Raza Haider, MQM leader and member Sindh Assembly, and his guard have been gunned down here in Nazimabad on Monday, Geo News reported.

Unknown armed motorcyclists fired shots at Raza Haider as well as his guard when he was preparing to attend a funeral prayer at Jamia Masjid of Nazimabad Block No.2.

Raza Haider, who received a bullet in his head died when he was being rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. The guard later succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical aid at the hospital.

The MQM leader was elected from PS-94 Karachi 6.

Separate incidents of firing were reported in different parts of the city shortly after the fatal attack on MQM leader.

The incident sent a wave of fear and panic across the metropolis, as shopkeepers pulled down their shutters in view of any violent reaction by enraged people.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik condemned the incident, urging the people to remain calm.

He termed the targeted killings in Karachi as a ‘latest tool’ being used to destabilize the country.

Rehman Malik urged MQM leaders to wait for investigation and called upon the people to observe restraint.

He said he would soon hold a meeting with MQM leaders.

MQM leaders Babar Ghauri and Haider Abbas Rizvi expressed profound grief on the tragic incident.

“It would be difficult to put a cap on the chapter opened (today),” Babar Ghauri asserted.

Iran's Ahmadinejad survives 'assassination attempt'

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has survived an attack on his convoy in western Iran, media reports from the region say.

The reports say a bomb was thrown at the convoy in the city of Hamedan, where he was to deliver a speech.

Mr Ahmadinejad was unhurt and went ahead with the speech to a rally at a football stadium, which was broadcast live on state TV.

According to Arab TV reports, a number of people were wounded in the attack.

Dubai-based Al Arabiya television said the attacker hit a car carrying journalists. The attacker was detained, it added.

"This morning a hand grenade exploded next to a vehicle carrying reporters accompanying the president in Hamedan," Iranian website Khabaronline reported.

"Ahmadinejad's car was 100 metres (yards) away and he was not hurt."

Pakistan, Afghanistan stability intertwined: Qureshi

Thursday, 05 Aug, 2010

ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi said on Thursday that a stable, peaceful and prosperous Afghanistan was in Pakistan's interest and that peace and stability of the two countries were intertwined.

The foreign minister expressed these views during his call-on to visiting Vice President of Afghanistan Mohammad Karim Khalili here on Thursday.

Referring to strong brotherly relationship existing between the two countries, the foreign minister reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to further strengthen its relations with Afghanistan.

He assured the Afghan vice president that Pakistan supports the road-map laid down by the Kabul Conference recently, and earlier, by the Afghan Peace Jirga.

Pakistan believes that the reconciliation and re-integration process has to be broad-based and Afghan-led, he added. Qureshi noted that the relationship between the two countries has entered into a new era of cooperation and hoped that both sides will show the necessary restraint to further consolidate this cooperation.

Pakistan has offered US $330 million for Afghanistan's reconstruction and has recently increased the number of scholarships for Afghan students from 1000 to 2000. About 6000 Afghan students are already enrolled in Pakistan's various Universities and Colleges.

The Afghan vice president expressed deep sympathies over the tragic loss of lives and devastation caused by torrential rains and floods in Pakistan.

The foreign minister thanked the Afghan government for providing four helicopters for rescue operations.

Thanking the government of Pakistan for its generous development assistance, the Afghan vice president said that the assistance indicates Pakistan's strong commitment to the reconstruction of Afghanistan.

He hoped that the cooperation that they have seen after the change of government in Pakistan will continue to expand further. He assured that the Afghan leadership is determined to strengthen this relationship.

The vice president also thanked the government and people of Pakistan for hosting the Afghan refugees and the offer the Government of Pakistan has made for the training of Afghan Police and Army officials.

Both leaders noted that the recently concluded negotiations on Afghanistan-Pakistan Transit Trade Agreement will further strengthen expanding relations between the two countries. -APP

ISI chief’s UK visit was not scheduled, says PM

By Syed Irfan Raza
Friday, 06 Aug, 2010

ISLAMABAD: A week after the cancellation of a reportedly planned visit by ISI DG Lt-Gen Ahmed Shuja Pasha to London in protest against disparaging remarks made by British Prime Minister David Cameron against Pakistan, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said on Thursday that no such visit by the head of the agency had been scheduled.

“No high-profile visit of the ISI was scheduled for the UK,” the prime minister told journalists at the Prime Minister’s House.

“Had there been any scheduled high-profile visit of the ISI, I would have been informed about it,” Mr Gilani said.

Soon after the controversial remarks made by the British prime minister, reports appeared in the media that the ISI chief had cancelled his visit to UK. It put pressure on President Asif Ali Zardari to also call off his visit to Britain. Now the president is facing severe criticism for undertaking the visit.

The prime minister’s claim that no visit by the ISI chief appears to be correct because ISPR never spoke about any such visit or cancellation. The ISPR, which promptly reacts to any information about the military, kept quiet on reports of ISI chief’s visit.

However, sources told Dawn that a team of ISI officials was scheduled to visit Britain, but Lt-Gen Shuja Pasha was not supposed to be in the delegation.

Talking about President Zardari’s visit to France and Britain, the prime minister said the issue should not be made controversial because it had been planned six months ago and “could not be avoided”.

When asked if it was wise for the president to proceed abroad when the country was experiencing the worst floods in its history which have wreaked havoc in the country, killed hundreds and displaced hundreds of thousands of people, the prime minister said: “Mr Zardari is a personality who is always remembered. He would have been remembered and criticised even if there were no floods in the country.”

He claimed that the visit had not affected relief and rescue operations being carried out in flood-hit areas.

“I am the chief executive of the country, I am here and my whole cabinet is here to supervise the relief operation which is our responsibility and not the president’s.”

The prime minister urged all political parties and the nation to bury their differences and join hands to cope with the calamity.

“The nation has faced such situations in the past and I hope it will display the same courage and dedication to overcome the present crisis,” he said.

The prime minister was asked about the role of PML-N in relief operations and whether or not the Punjab government had demanded Rs10 billion from Centre for the rescue and relief work and threatened to stop its Sasti Roti project if it did not get the money. He ducked the question and said the government was using all its resources equally in the flood-hit areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Balochistan, Azad Jammu & Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.

“I have given a plane to Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to visit flood-hit areas. Tents, mats and food are also being supplied to affected people in Punjab by the National Disaster Management Authority.”

He said the government had decided not to call the scheduled session of the National Assembly and asked all lawmakers to look after people in flood-affected areas.

The prime minister said he had asked NA Speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza to discuss the issue with the Leader of Opposition.

He criticised Interior Minister Rahman Malik for blaming Taliban, Sipah-i-Sahaba and Lashkar-i-Jhangvi for the assassination of MQM MPA Raza Haider which triggered the current bout of violence in Karachi.

He said that Mr Malik should wait for the report of a high-level inquiry before blaming any organisation or group.

FAKE CAMP:

The prime minister also ordered an inquiry into media reports that a fake medical camp had been set up in the flood-affected area of Mianwali on Wednesday for him to distribute cheques among patients for a photo session.

“It was my own choice to go there because people standing near the medical camp were calling me over. Despite instructions of security officials, who asked me not to go there, I went there and met patients and those attending to them.”

Flood water touches highest levels in Sukkur, Guddu

Monday, August 09, 2010
Next 24 hours extremely crucial; eight districts on high alert; Sindh embankments declared as Red Zones; over 700 Katcha areas inundated in Khairpur; Sindh minister admits failure in handling floods

By our correspondents,SUKKUR/LARKANA/DADU: Floodwater has touched its highest level of 1,115,210 cusecs at the Sukkur Barrage and 1,128,738 cusecs at the Guddu Barrage with the next 24 hours considered to be extremely crucial.

Officials are predicting an increase in the water level at Guddu and Sukkur Barrages due to the hill torrents and flash water. Hundreds of villages were flooded due to breaches at many protective embankments from Ghouspur, Guddu, B-S Feeder, Bachal Shah Miani embankment and Sindhoja embankment.

Heavy pressure of flood is persisting at Qadirpur Loop protective embankment, Nusrat Loop embankment and Aqil embankment.

Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah, provincial Irrigation Minister Jam Saifullah Dharejo, secretary irrigation, and others had been weighing their options to develop breaches in the Ali Wahan embankment and some other embankments so as to save the urban population and business-based areas. The Sindh government has now declared these embankments as Red Zones.

In Rohri, floodwater claimed the lives of six people besides washing away hundreds of cattle. Navy rescue teams of Pano Aqil pulled out bodies of a girl and a woman. The Sukkur Airport is also under threat as due to a breach near Bachal Shah Miani, water is moving towards it.

The doors of the Sukkur Barrage have also been opened, but there was heavy water pressure at the barrage. Shikarpur city is also under the threat of flooding where Sajjan Mahaisar is at high risk of inundation.

District Coordination Officer Larkana Sayed Hassan Naqvi has claimed that eight thousand people had been shifted and evacuated from the Katcha areas to safer places. However, the media team observed that only 60 to 70 men, women and children at two relief camps of New Gudd and Old Gudd village of Bakrani Taluka were evacuated.

Federal Minister for Youth and Affairs Shahid Hussain Bhutto on Sunday visited various sensitive points of the River Indus and affected villages in Katcha areas due to the flood water. On the occasion, Naqvi briefed the federal minister about the situation of flood water in Larkana district.

Earlier, Speaker Sindh Assembly Nisar Khuhro, along with party leaders and workers, inspected protective Akil embankment and Larkana-Khairpur Bridge and reviewed the arrangements of relief camps here at his native village and other locations.

A three-feet hole developed and damaged a part of Larkana-Khairpur Bridge due to heavy rainfall. Heavy rain lashed Larkana and other surroundings areas, inundating several government and private buildings including the Chandka Medical College, Civil Hospital, Shaikh Zaid Women Hospital, Pilot High School, Sambara Inn, Government Degree College, Shahnawaz Bhutto Memorial Library, District Council Office, Larkana, Kausar Mill, Nazar Muhalla, Waleed Shaikh Zaid Colony, Ali Mohammed Colony, Gharib Abad, Lahori Muhalla and various other parts of cities.

Floods also played huge havoc in the Dadu district on Sunday. According to irrigation officials, six lack cusecs of water passed the Indus River here. Some 75 villages of the district Dadu in Katcha area were inundated by the flood water.

DCO Dadu Iqbal Memon also issued another warning that the KT Jatoi embankment may be destroyed and a breach may occur. A 50-feet wide breach occurred at Johi Barrage at RD 42 near village Sahib Khoso after which as many as another five villages were inundated along with hundreds of acres of cultivated agriculture land.

Heavy rain lashed all parts of district Thatta on Sunday. The entire Thatta city was inundated. The Sindh Minister for Irrigation Jam Saifullah Dharaijo finally admitted that the Sindh government has failed to handle the flood situation. Talking to Reporters at Sukkur, he said that the Sindh government has completely failed to cope with the flood situation. He said that this is a natural calamity and the Sindh government needs the help of the community and donor agencies in this regard.

APP adds: Over 700 villages of Katcha areas of the Indus River have been inundated in district Khairpur during the last three days and the water level is further increasing. All the villages from Baberloi to Sagyoon in Taluka Khairpur, Kingri, Gambat and Taluka Sonbhodero have been inundated.

Federal Minister for Water and Power Raja Pervez Ashraf has said emergency has been declared in eight districts of Sindh in view of potential floods. Talking to various news channels in Jacobabad, he said there is not a huge threat of flood in Jacobabad and abutting areas but nevertheless, eight districts have been put on a high alert and emergency has been declared there as a security measure.

Twenty insurgents killed in Afghanistan: Nato

Thursday, 12 Aug, 2010

KABUL: At least 20 insurgents were killed in Afghanistan's southeast in an operation against the Haqqani network, whose leader Washington wants designated a terrorist, the Nato-led alliance said on Thursday.

Air strikes were called in after Afghan and International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) troops found dozens of insurgents in “entrenched fighting positions” in a mountainous area of Dzadran district in Paktia, not far from the Pakistan border, Isaf said in a statement.

Washington is pressuring Pakistan to take action against the Haqqani network, a group allied with the Taliban and believed to have close links with al-Qaeda.

“This area is a known Haqqani network safe haven and used to stage attacks into Kabul and the Khost-Gardez pass,” Isaf said.

“An air weapons team suppressed the enemy, resulting in more than 20 insurgents killed so far.”

The Haqqani network, headed by Jalaluddin Haqqani, a hero of the 1980s guerrilla war against the Soviet Union, and his son, is based mainly in Pakistan's North Waziristan and adjoining provinces in Afghanistan.

It has staged several high-profile attacks, including an assassination attempt on Afghan President Hamid Karzai in 2008.

General James Mattis, confirmed on August 6 as the new head of the US military command overseeing operations in Afghanistan and elsewhere, said last month he wanted leaders of the group designated as terrorists, a move seen as raising pressure on Pakistan to go after the group.

Pakistan sees Haqqani — who had long-standing links with its military spy agency — as likely to be a valuable asset in Afghanistan if US troops leave before the country is stabilised.

“The Haqqani network is a prevalent insurgent threat in Afghanistan right now. Afghan and coalition forces are focused on smothering their influence and power,” the statement quoted US Army Colonel Rafael Torres as saying.

Effective leadership of the group has now passed from Jalaluddin Haqqani, who is in his 70s, to his more militant eldest son, Sirajuddin, security analysts say.

Fighting in Afghanistan, led by a resurgent Taliban movement, has intensified as US troops prepare to start staged withdrawals from July 2011.

June of this year was the deadliest month for foreign forces in nearly 10 years of war.

A UN report said this week that civilian casualties had risen 31 per cent in the first half of 2010, including 1,271 killed.

Almost 150,000 foreign soldiers are under the command of Nato and the US military.
