Few questions about HEC scholarships (2006 graduate)
I did my MSc(CS) in 2006 and once I also gave GAT test and got 65 marks in 2008 but I have always been busy in practical life rather than pursuing for further studies and now I am thinking of doing MPhil (maybe be phD too).
I want to get in touch with current situation so I have few questions to ask and hopefully you can answer them patiently.. i) Scholarships are awarded purely on the basis of GAT result or it has also something to do with http://www.hec.gov.pk/INSIDEHEC/DIVI...onFormula.aspx and of course I know that no double second divisions are accepted? ii) What is the difference between Overseas Scholarships 90% and 10%? iii) In 2008, 65 marks were considered very good with 96.68 percentile how its considered now? iv) Where I can have good study material for GAT Subjective (CS)? v) How many marks in GAT general are now considered as sure bet for being awarded scholarship? Thanks for your time. |

1. The HEC scholarship under 90 percent Overseas program are granted purely on the basis of GAT general score as for as 10 percent is concerned the final selection under this program will on the basis of GAT+Academic evaluation and also IELTS and International GRE. 2. 90 percent program is offering near about 450 scholarships in all disciplines and scholarships are granted purely on the basis of GAT General. Under 10 percent program there are near about 10 to 15 scholarships offered and they require International GRE and IELTS. these both are fully funded scholarships. 3. The trend is same as this was in 2008. recently I have qualified GAT general in the month of APril 2012 in which I also got 65 score with percentile 95, and it depends on your province if you are from Punjab thn you must get 70+ to compete with others, in sindh 60+ marks are enough to get scholarship and same in other provinces. 4. Jahangir Series GAT Computer Science book is suggested for GAT subjective test. If you have any other query you may ask |

i) Overseas 90% project is finished by this year because I read on the HEC website that 2000 scholars were to grand this scholarship? Or its on going project and I can participate in the competition? ii) Where its mentioned on HEC website that 90% is purely based on GAT score? iii) GAT merit has flown to the top from 2008 to 2012 because I remember one of my remote friend was granted scholarship and he had scored only 62 and he is from punjab as well? btw I have enquired from a book shop and he said there is no Jahangir Series GAT Computer Science book.. is there any alternative? |

i) Whether a project is calling for inductions or has been finished, is usually mentioned on HEC website. If you will click on that project link, you will find it there. ii) What i have experienced and seen, the selections are made on the GAT score. It is not explicitly written on the website but when you register for it and take the test, they (HEC) announce a cut-off marks lists for all provinces for all subject fields whereby it is announced that the candidates who scored below the cut-off marks in GAT general should consider themselves disqualified. iii) Merit is changed every year and it is different for different fields. It has definitely changed from 2008 till 2012 because of increasing competition. (As happens everywhere). So, as a general idea about your success, if you want to be inducted in a good university abroad or be inducted at all, your marks should be around 80 or a friend from Life Sciences advised to score 80+. iv) I dont have any idea about the books. Well, it seems to me that 90% scholarships are over from now on because intake duration listed on the website is 4 years and last intake batch included seem to be of July 8th this year. http://www.hec.gov.pk/InsideHEC/Divi...bjectives.aspx http://www.hec.gov.pk/InsideHEC/Divi...GAT%20Test.jpg But interestingly there are total 5 batches listed (4 expired) so it will get to total of 2250 (450 * 5) but 90% scheme has to intake total of 1800.. Isn't it confusing stats? |

Hmm, it sounds good BUT seeing the financial situation of our country and Govt's priority towards HEC, I barely see any chance of extension of this project. What's your reasoning of taking it as 'only approximation' while its clearly stated on the webpage "The project was approved by ECNEC in its meeting held on July 29, 2006 at a total cost of Rs.14522.35 million for a duration of 9 years."? |
