Although many companies claim that their softwares can retrieve the lost information but I haven't seen corrupted data get recovered in my 12 years of using computer.
You have to backup your data consistently in order to avoid data being lost.
May be some other member has some solution to share, but in my humble opinion, corrupted data of MS Word is really hard to recover.

If files display in your system but you are unable to open in MS word try to open in MS WORD 2007.

Try following:

1. If files are deleted from your hard disk, try using 'hard disk data recovery tools', you can buy a CD from market, they are sometimes cracked and sometimes needs registration. They do the work all the time (registered ones), i have myself even recovered most of the data, i hope you could get too (fingers crossed)

2. If the corrupt files are on system, try following,

a. Try opening them in 'open office', its like the other office but open source, used for LINUX e.t.c

b. Try opening them in a programming language .NET, C++ e.t.c (or try reading them there) this would at least get you your text data back (less chances of figures and graphs)

Hops this helps
