Islam Invite to the Way of your Lord with wisdom and fair preaching, and argue with them in a way that is better. Truly, your Lord knows best who has gone astray from His Path, and He is the Best Aware of those who are guided." Holy Qur'an 16:125

Due to the risk of Fitna (corruption and immorality), it is inappropriate for non-Mahram men and women to greet each other with Assalaamu Alaykum or any other greeting. However, if a man is greeted by an elderly woman or he greets the elderly woman it is permissible for the one greeted to reply. Conversely, if a young woman greets a man or a man greets a young woman, the one greeted should not reply verbally; rather, he or she should reply within his or her heart.

But sir we have relatives we have families and we are doing salam to each other although from Islamic point of view Except few relations like mother, sister, wife etc are not non-mahram but there are other members in family and according to Islam they are non-mehram .We have also a system of joint family so the same thing will be applied or we can reply verbally.

Brother I replied you with an opinion of religious scholar. You can apply it to your situation. What we are practically doing is irrelevant when seeking Islamic injunctions.

Regards!

You can say salam to your father in law because father in law is listed among mehram

Default Gaze the most minor way of communication

Brother..To see someone requires least effort and energy..Your eyes are the most minor communicators...Even you are not allowed to raise your gaze upon non-mehrams in Islam..It is established that you cannot convey or concieve a shred of your feeling or any info to anyone/from anyone..
How could you are allowed to talk or say Salam...It's not allowed to say Salam or reply any greetings...You are allowed only to communicate in case of emergency, religious guidance (when alternative is not available) via letters or even if you have less time you can talk but from a distance and in veil,or in case of education again in veil and in utmost need...There is no concept of co-education in Islam even a shred of it...Modern Muslims in name of social and scientific development using this tactic just to reach out women easily, nothing else...You can see how much scientific development is going on due to co-education...Scientific development is that our girls are "with hope" before marriages and the people are wondering how the gestation periods are decreased...
So,the reason to talk here is...We are not allowed...If anyone want to do...Then do..But he/she must be sure that we are committing a sin...
