my friend just do it for the fact that you would be avoiding 'war with Allah (s.w.t)' naoozobillah, as it is clearly mentioned in Quran that any one involved in interest or related business is at war with Allah s.w.t naoozobillah. Have this though and the rest of your life would be a living sawab itself.

Rest assured i am related to academia and research for past 4 years, and its one of the perfect jobs on earth, just normal timings, and even in them if yu are free you are not bound at all....

Allah s.w.t bless you

Just for your reference friends, as we have to be answerable eventually (no matter what), decision lies with you, i am just trying to present whatever i find...

Interest (Usury or Riba) in Islam

Whether it is one per cent or 50 per cent, Islam forbids taking of interest in all its forms.

In Islam, interest comes under the category of “riba”, or usury. A Muslim is not allowed to receive, pay or witness interest payments. However, the concept of interest has been twisted and abused to such an extent that many Muslim countries have allowed financial institutions to engage in interest-based activities.

Muslims should be aware of the seriousness of interest and other forms of riba, by referring back to Allah and his messenger, Muhammad (may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him).

War – Allah has declared war on those who consume interest. In Surah al-Baqarah, verses 278-27 of the Quran, He says: “O you who believe! Be afraid of Allah and give up what remains (due to you) from riba (usury) (from now onward), if you are (really) believers. And if you do not do it, then take a notice of war from Allah and His Messenger . . .”

The scope of forbidding Interest – the Prophet has clearly told us those who are parties to an interest-based contract. Jaabir reported that the Prophet cursed “the one who consumes riba, the one who gives it to others, the one who writes it down and the one who witnesses it. They are all the same.” (Muslim, 3/1219).

Trade – Allah has made a clear distinction between riba and trade, to quash the arguments of those who say they are merely engaging in trade. In the Quran, surah al-Baqarah, verse 275, He says: Those who eat riba (usury) will not stand (on the Day of Resurrection) except like the standing of a person beaten by Shaitan (Satan) leading him to insanity. That is because they say: ‘Trading is only like riba,’ whereas Allah has permitted trading and forbidden riba. So whosoever receives an admonition from his Lord and stops eating riba shall not be punished for the past; his case is for Allah (to judge); but whoever returns (to riba), such are the dwellers of the Fire - they will abide therein.”

well its a tricky question and i already have discussed this topic on numerous occasions with some of my my friends who r working in banks & each n every time they end up on saying that our whole country's system is based on it & business community can not survive without it. our govt takes loans from SBP & all the big companies take credit/financing/LC facilities from banks etc etc & so on.

2ndly i think switching industry is diff as compare to switching ur job while staying in the same industry. if u feel any guilty while working for banks bcz of interest factor and still want to stay in banking sector then u can go 4 Islamic banks. (now i m not going in to this discussion that whether they r truly Islamic or not? as most of us say that k "kan idar say pakar lo ya udar say bat to aik hi hai na")

we all know that banks can not survive without deposit. One question we must ask from ourselves that If our people hate these banks so much then y people deposit their funds in their accounts?

(according to mufti's one must even not open current account in the non Islamic banks. now think how many of us have such account)

In the end, i will suggest that if u get a "good" opportunity to switch your job then one must go for it despite of the fact that from which ever industry u belong to.

My brother I joined this discussion just to suggest/advice you one thing.

Banking job is haram and University job is halal. It's your decision. I would have chosen halal rozee over haram rozee.

May Allah guide and help us all. Ameen.
