Hello friends,
I am a Civil Service aspirant just like you all but not for FPSC but for UPSC, India( Union Public Service Commission).
I was just googling about Governor- General of British India when I came across this page. I navigated to the British- India section in History and was quite amused that we are also studying the same. I mean I am quite thrilled by the very fact that I landed on this page and your general discussion also happens to match the discussion that we do at our websites.
The compt. in India for Civil Service is very tough.
Around 9Lakh candidates apply out of which there are only
100 post for IAS(Indian Administrative Officer)
80 post for IPS(Police Service)
40 post for IFS(Foreign Service)
We have Prelims(Objective) then Mains(Written, Optional+Other Subjects) and then Interview
WoW! So different feeling typing this message. This is for the first time in my life that I am communicating to any Pakistani.
I know I should not be here, maybe admin won't like my unnecessary presence but I just couldn't help myself in communicating with you all!

I will definitely download you past year Objective papers from British- Indian History and practice as a mock.

Would you like to enlighten us about the structure of UPSC, approximately how many candidates are allowed to sit in exams after prelims? What are the stages of this whole process? How many marks each stage carry ? How many occupational groups are there apart from IAS and IPS? Is there any Quota System? And finally do you guys have some website similar to This website?

First of all thanks all for your responses.
UPSC(which is apparently called FPSC in Pak) is considered to be one of the most prestigious exam here in India. It's the 2nd toughest exam in the would(Toughness measured on the basis of no. of seat available to no. of people applying in it), the first being the administrative exam of China!

Alos, I don't understand what all you mean by Occupational groups?
The UPSC Civil Services Exam is conducted in two stages Prelims and Mains which are then followed by an interview.

Scheme and subjects for the Preliminary and Main Examinations is as follows:

Preliminary Examination

There are two compulsory papers of 200 marks each in the Civil Services Prelims Exam.

Syllabus of Paper I -(200 marks) Duration : Two hours
Current events of national and international importance.
History of India and Indian National Movement.
Indian and World Geography - Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.
Indian Polity and Governance - Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
Economic and Social Development - Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc.
General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change - that do not require subject specialisation General Science.

Syllabus for Paper II-(200 marks) Duration: Two hours
Comprehension
Interpersonal skills including communication skills;
Logical reasoning and analytical ability
Decision-making and problemsolving
General mental ability
Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. - Class X level)

Blind candidates are allowed an extra 20 minutes of time at each paper.

Main Examination/Written Exam
Out of 5 Lakh cadidates, only 17 thousand candidates are selected for this round.
The written examination will consist of the following papers:

Paper-I

Section 1 Essay 200 Marks

Section 2 English Comprehension & English Précis 100 Marks (The level of paper would be Matriculation/ Xth standard level)

Paper-II

General Studies–I 250Marks (Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society)

Paper-III General Studies –II 250 Marks (Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International relations)

Paper-IV General Studies –III 250 Marks (Technology, Economic Development, Bio-diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management)

Paper-V General Studies –IV 250 Marks (Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude)

Paper-VI Optional Subject – Paper 1 250 Marks

Paper-VII Optional Subject – Paper 2 250 Marks

Total marks from written test 1800 Marks

Personality Test (Interview) 275 Marks.

Based on this Grand Total
The first 100-120 rank holder get the most sought out Post -IAS, then the next 80-90 get Police Service, then next 40-50 gets Foreign Service(Ambassador)
There are total 20 Post each post containing around 100 to 20 seats, but the first 3 which I mentioned above is what people opt for.

Reservation: There are reservation for depressed classes/backward Classes, Minorities, Physically handicapped. SO if there are 100 seats for a particular post then out of that 45-50 seats will be reserved for them. This is why it becomes tough for General category students
I belong to General category, so I won't get any reservation.

There are 100 of websites for Civil services.
Delhi is the hub for Civil Service coaching. They charge any where between 1lakh to 1.30 Lakh per student for coaching

I was working earlier as a Soft. Engineer in Norway, but I left my job and came Delhi for the preparation. Private job suxx.

Thanks for this information and best of luck for your Exams. Here FPSC conducts examination for CSS and is a credible institution. Unfortunately prelim examination is not conducted here so 10 to 13 thousand candidates appear in written examination which is a huge number keeping in view our population.

Written examination consists of 1200 marks out of which 600 are for compulsory subjects and 600 for optionals.300 marks are for psychological and viva voice.

I would be obliged if you throw some light on your preparation for the exam of Essay. How do you guys approach this exam and what is your source of preparation for this. For us, Essay is of 100 marks and we have to write on one topic for 3 hours. I am asking you this because Essay is very critical Exam for us because most of the times it is a deciding factor for getting through written examination. OMG! They have given incredible and superb essay topics and I can sense that writing on any of these topics for 3 hours is really very tough.
Our essay paper carries 250 marks and anyone scoring around 150 is seen as excellent.
We don't specificaly prepare for essay. Since the prepartion for Mains paper encompasses a wide range of topics, it helps us in essay as well.
But that said, this is how we go for essay.

We read the editorial section of newspaper religiously and then paraphrase the entire editorial in our own words. This helps us to improve our writing skills and since editorial covers a huge range of topics that if you have paraphrased all the editorials there can be no essay topic which would seem difficult.

What you can do is follow the editorials of 'The Dawn' and 'The Express Tribuine'. I guess 'The Dawn' is one of the best newspaper in the entire suncontinent. If some newspaper in India can match Dawn, its 'The Hindu'(n Don't go by it's name, it has nothing to do with the Hindu religion, it is just that it was started in 1860s and later sold to someone else who decided to continue with the name since it was well known paper) and the 'Indian Express'

In fact, I have downloaded 'The Dawn' newspaper iOS application in my mobile and I often refer to their editorials. They are very good and well written.

Read 2-3 hours everyday especially focus on the Editorials & other Analytical & Critical articles. Ex in my Newspaper I focus on Magazine, Book Review, Literary Review, Business Review, Open Page, 2 page OP-ED Page & Editorial Page. Whenever you encounter a DIFFICULT PHRASE, IDIOM, PART OF SPEECH etc just see the Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary or Chambers Dictionary & in a Diary note down that word, its meaning, its usage in sentence etc. This MUST be done within 1-2 minutes. Don’t keep it pending.

The basic idea is to make yourself “well-read” & with a COMMAND over ENGLISH … For this READ SOME GOOD QUALITY novels or poems after searching Google (For ex. Best 100 Poems of Twentieth Century, Best 100 Plays of All Time etc. )

4.5 Lakh students competing for 100 seats makes this exam very very tough! and that is why so much of effort is required! One to 1.5 years of preparation is required before anyone can even think of giving their first attempt! Our prelim is on coming 23rd and I will upload the papers here also so that you all can all have an idea.
