Dear Friends & fellows:
Could anyone tell me about the facilities that are given to the parents of a person rendering the Foreign Services of Pakistan. Besides, whether are they accomated with him/her or not? Regards/ |

Foreign service has no benefits for parents of an officer,in fact they dont even sponsor a ticket for parents to the destination of posting
Frankly FSP is the most over-rated group in terms of perks . It is an aptitude job and the typical "Afsari" is seldom enjoyed by the officers. You get an official car in grade 20 i.e twenty years of service and this too has been alloted in recent past. |

well you just need to be in FSP to know the benefits ....just an example...during the STP (six months) of FSP the probationers spend around forty days in hague with all their expenses covered..not to mention the stipends/TA-DA they get as well ...on the other hand DMG/PSP people spend their days in places like mardan/swabi/dera ismail khan and even in the most remotest places of Pak facing grave threats to their life on a daily basis ....i gave this example since this is the first taste an officer gets of his or her service right after the end of CTP...the rest of d story is also d same...
reg perks and priviliges ..surely FSP is a relatively clean service with little chances of corruption...i would gladly like other services to take the lead in these matters ...otherwise in all other matters tis d best.... d simple reason y FSP personnels dont indulge in debates reg which service is d best is because they are really not concerned with such small talks ...just read ESTA CODE and tis clearly stated there that FSP lies in Group A while DMG/PSP and all the financial services are below it ... |

There are good and bad things in every service. X1Xi has shed some light on the positives. Here I will share what I don't like in the service:
1. FSP can be rewarding when one is posted abroad. But at the headquarter in Islamabad, one has to survive within his clean salary. There is no vehicle for an officer of less than BPS-20. Even in BPS-19 a FSP Officer is accommodated in a room in Foreign Service Hostel, not given a big bungalow like DPO or DCO. His telephone ceiling is limited. He has no official servants at his disposal. And if he wants to eat inexpensive food from the hostel mess, he will have to eat what the mess secretary has decided in the menu. He has the only choice of going to some hotel. 2. The real charm of Foreign Service is to serve in missions in places like US, EU, UK, Australia, Canada, France, Germany etc. Many officers who don't have good links will never get these opportunities. 3. While the foreign allowances given to the officer might be enough in inexpensive countries, they are often inadequate in expensive cities like London, Paris, Moscow, Tokyo, Washington etc. One has to be tight fisted to survive there. 4. A foreign service officer has to serve three years in a foreign country. I don't know exactly how many times the government sponsors his return to the country but I can guess it's not more than twice. An officer gets seriously homesick. And since many know that their earning will be whatever they save from their foreign postings, they try to limit their visits to their home country because it costs too much. 5. Foreign Service gives no recognition among common people because it does not bring you in direct contact with the public. Foreign Service officer is of no use to the ordinary people. Please excuse my ignorance if anything I mentioned above is incorrect. My purpose is not to establish the superiority of any group. I just hope someone aspiring for a career in civil service will be able to make a smarter and more informed choice after reading all this. Regards,

The gentleman asked about "parental facilities" and FSP doesn't offer much in that area.
Secondly a very logical conclusion from analyzing facts would be that FSP is over-rated ,a huge drawback of the service is that all prized posyings are usually given to people from outside FSP e.g Current Ambassador to US,UK,Saudi Arabia e.t.c are not from FSP. An officer serving almost 20 years is kind of superceded by an outsider when it comes to prized positions I dont mean to deride any service ,FSP is a coveted profession and it has its charm and elegance, the point I was trying to make is that it is purely an aptitude job. An artist doesn't worry about the price of his paintings ,all he is concerned about is personal satisfaction and "Diplomats" should be similar breeds An FSP officer is eligible for a Red Passport(Diplomatic Passport) which is one matchless perk Case Closed

1)But at the headquarter in Islamabad, one has to survive within his clean salary ......
answer : thats right and i guess its gud if we do surivive in that ...no corruption etc is a great blessing in disguise..atleast we dont receive every now and then phone calls from MNA's etc demanding to release their workers which were caught red handed ... secondly overall from foreign tours fsp people save a lot of money hence they dont require any more perks n priviliges 2) no vehicle for an officer of less than BPS-20. ans...vehicle /bungalow/servants etc are again small issues for FSP people...reason i have already given above...i have just come back from holland and saved around 2 lakh rupees in just forty days....my other collegues saved a lot more than that ....i would be going abroad again for a language course of one year soon inshallah and even if i do indulge in excessive spending i can easily manage to save around ten lakh ....then again after one and a half year i would be going on a three year period to two foreign countries ....yes the amount of saving do change wrt to the country ur posted but overall one is really satisfied ... 3)Many officers who don't have good links will never get these opportunities. ans....good links count in each and every service....same goes for psp and dmg...yet at the same time if ur hardworking and know ur job v well then eventually u do get noticed...i know of many instances in which the ambassador himself requested the HQ to extend the stay of a 3rd sec just because he simply couldnt manage without him 4) they are often inadequate in expensive cities like London, Paris, Moscow, Tokyo, Washington etc. One has to be tight fisted to survive there. ans...to some extent its true....but being tight fisted doesnt mean u have to skip ur meals etc..it just means that the entertainment allowance that u get is usually not enough for u to throw big parties for ur friends every now and then...as u know tis really imp to cultivate PRs in FSP and for this reason a speciall allowance called ent all is given 5) I don't know exactly how many times the government sponsors his return to the country but I can guess it's not more than twice. ans....petty issue reg buying an airline ticket 6)An officer gets seriously homesick ans....true 7)gives no recognition among common people because it does not bring you in direct contact with the public ans...to some extent true...FSP people doesnt conduct khuli katcheri n stuff like that in open air theatre with temp running at 50 deg C....but some sections do have public dealing esp the Protocol and Visa etc which they do while sitting in their comfortable air conditioned rums 8)all prized posyings are usually given to people from outside FSP e.g Current Ambassador to US,UK,Saudi Arabia e.t.c are not from FSP ans....political interferrence is in every serv to some degree..i have quoted an instance above....tis just a matter of relativity....though with the passage of time FSP is also getting more and more specialised and prominent and role of OUTSIDERS is also on a decline |

I have seen queries being put up on FSP by some worthy members and their replies/ clarifications given by other knowledgable fellows. All this debate is really informative for all of us.
But I believe the thread starter wished to have info about "parental facilities" offered in FSP, if that could be answered in detail by X1Xi or some other learned member, it would be highly appreciable.
