Q.2. Make a précis of the given passage and suggest a suitable heading. (20+5)

From Plato to Tolstoi art has been accused of exciting our emotions and thus of disturbing the order and harmony of our moral life.” Poetical imagination, according to Plato, waters our experience of lust and anger, of desire and pain, and makes them grow when they ought to starve with drought. “Tolstoi sees in art a source of infection. “Not only in infection,” he says, “a sign of art , but the degree of infectiousness is also the sole measure of excellence in art.” But the flaw in this theory is obvious. Tolstoi suppresses a fundamental moment of art, the moment of form. The aesthetic experience – the experience of contemplation- is a different state of mind from the coolness of our theoretical and the sobriety of our moral judgment. It is filled with the liveliest energies of passion, but passion itself is here transformed both in its nature and in its meaning. Wordsworth defines poetry as “ emotion recollected in tranquility’. But the tranquility we feel in great poetry is not that of recollection. The emotions aroused by the poet do not belong to a remote past. They are “ here”- alive and immediate. We are aware of their full strength, but this strength tends in a new direction. It is rather seen than immediately felt. Our passions are no longer dark and impenetrable powers; they become, as it were, transparent. Shakespeare never gives us an aesthetic theory. He does not speculate about the nature of art. Yet in the only passage in which he speaks of the character and functions of dramatic art the whole stress is laid upon this point. “ The purpose of playing,” as Hamlet explains, “ both at the first and now, was and is, to hold, as, twere, the mirror up to nature; to show virtue her own feature, scorn her own image, and the very age and body of the time, his form and pressure.” But the image of the passion is not the passion itself. The poet who represents a passion doest not infected us with this passion. At a Shakespeare play we are not infected with the ambition of Macbeth, with the cruelty of Richard III or with the jealously of Othello. We are not at the mercy of these emotions; we look through them; we seem to penetrate into their very nature and essence. In this respect Shakespeare’s theory of dramatic art, if he had such a theory, is in complete agreement with the conception of the fine arts of the great painters and sculptors.

Passionate Art may not arouse Passion

Since ages it is believed that art arouses our sentiments and serves as a crippling drain to our moral energies. According to Plato, poetry instigates our emotions. Tolstoy believes the more passion an art arises, the more remarkable it is. But these theories are not correct because creativity is expressed in a passionate state of mind and not a tranquil state of mind. So though the passion is apparent in art we see, it does not necessarily arouse same degree of passion in ourselves. Shakespeare’s words concede to this concept. In words of Hamlet, the purpose of a play is to reflect the nature of virtues and vices of emotions. We just observe the characters and absorb ourselves into their nature. But we are not infected by varying emotions of the different characters of Shakespearean plays.

@Sabah Hunzai

A nice attempt. You incorporated the main idea nicely and left little space to criticize. However one suggestion:

Although it is true that passage main idea is about science and psychology. But passage is talking about scientists and psychologists. A better approach would be to refer to scientists and psychologists. However it is not that much important till you are incorporating main idea, which you did .

However I think you need to take comments from other members too.

Paragraph

ALL is not well with the delivery of social services in Pakistan. There have been reports of poor performance, corruption and inefficiency in the education, health, housing and population sectors. Red tape is said to be a factor in the failure of government schools to utilise funds allocated to them. Recently, an MNA died in a government hospital in Islamabad and an independent inquiry attributed his death to medical negligence. Two allied departments of the housing ministry that is supposedly working to provide low-cost shelter to the poor have been rated among the ten most corrupt organisations in Pakistan by Transparency International. One could go on. The poor state of sanitation and water supply and the weak social safety net testify to the state’s inability to provide people basic facilities and services. Unfortunately, over the years people have increasingly been left to fend for themselves to meet their needs for education, healthcare and so on.

We are sympathetic to the constraints of the state: it does not have adequate resources, it does not have the most qualified manpower, political instability is a constant factor that makes long-term policy-making and implementation problematic. But the very point of a government is to try and improve things. Presently, the government has achieved some success on stabilising the finances of the state, but the policy side elsewhere looks very weak. The problems associated with delivering basic services to the people are not all about a lack of financial resources. For years, bottlenecks at the institutional level have meant that PSDP funds have not been utilised even where made available. Pouring more funds into a broken system with little direction and sense of purpose means that as nation we will continue to stumble along indefinitely unless our elected officials show some resolve outside isolated pockets.

Precis
Need to resolve the problems

The performance of the government in social sector of Pakistan is poor. The institutions responsible for providing services for well-being of the people are facing the severe crisis of mismanagement and corruption. This crisis has caused under-utilization of the funds and negligence, eventually leading to the poor status of standard of living. Such indications are also given by the international institutions. Irony is that, there is no lack of natural resources but lack of policy management and its execution. Except some little improvements nothing concrete is done. All this would go on unless the leadership evolve any right direction and give some creative inputs to manage the basic problems of the people.

CSS-2006 MAKE THE PRECIS OF THE FOLLOWING.

PRECIS WRITING - 2005

Basically, psychoses and neuroses represent man’s inability to maintain a balanced or equated polarity in conducting his life. The ego becomes exclusively or decidedly one sided. In psychoses there is a complete collapse of the ego back into the inner recesses of the personal and collective unconsciouses. When he is repressed toward fulfilling some life goal and where he is further unable to sublimate himself toward another goal, man regresses into goal structures not actually acceptable to himself or to the society. Strong emotional sickness of the psychotic type is like having the shadow run wild. The entire psyche regresses to archaic, animal forms of behaviors. In less severe forms of emotional sickness there may be an accentuated and overpowering use of one of the four mental functions at the expense of the other three. Either thinking, feeling, intuiting or seeing may assume such a superior role as to render the other three inoperative. The persona may become so dominant as to create a totally one-sided ego, as in some forms of neurotic behavior. All in all, whatever the type of severity of the emotional disorder, it can be taken as a failure of the psyche to maintain a proper balance between the polarities of life. Essentially, psychoses and neuroses are an alienation of the self from its true goal of self actualization. In this sense the culture is of no consequence. Emotional disorder is not a question of being out of tune with one’s culture so much as it is of being out of tune with one’s self. Consequently, neurosis is more than bizarre behavior, especially as it may be interpreted by contemporaries in the culture. This interpretation avoids the sociological question of what is a mental disorder, since form of behavior which is acceptable in one culture may be considered neurotic in other culture. To Jung, the deviation from cultural norms is not the point. The inability to balance out personal polarities is.

TITLE: PERSONAL POLARIETES - DETERMINING FACTOR IN HUMAN CONDUCT

The conduct of human beings in their life is suffers from two extremes, psychoses & neuroses. In psychoses, the human ego is suppressed so much so that he is unable to develop his own opinion, like & dislike about the goal of life. In such a condition he is unable to direct himself to the goal of his own interest & adopts animal form of behaviour. Unlike psychoses, in neuroses the personality of human being became highly dominant which results in extremeness in like & dislikes. Both of these forms of behavioral disorder are marked by deviation not from the norms of the society but aloofness from ones inner-self. [109 WORDS]

Poor Social Services in Pakistan
The Social services in Pakistan is getting worsen day by day. People are denied their basic human needs of health and education. The corruption and bad governance in govt.departments is on rise, and thus adding fuel to fire. Though, the govt. is engulfed with political instability but this does not free the govt.from the responsibilities. There are some positive indicators on economic side but problem lies with the policy-making and its effective implementation. The govt. is not lacking of financial resources rather lacking in strong will to counter these problems. This severe situation may likely to continue unless parliamentarians show seriousness to resolve these issues.(total 105 words)
