Default Dealing with chronic problems through Social Pressure

In Pakistan, tax evasion, not paying of electricity bills, having lots of illegal weapons are the common characteristics through which a person can label someone a politician or someone having great political clout.May be, this should be due to the deliberate negligence of the laws on the side of the politicians or great wit to dodge the system of accountability.but for me its their socially approved behavior which do not compel them to abandon illegal activities.when favorable definitions for some behavior-though illegal-outnumber the unfavorable definitions, there comes the repetition of same behavior.in most of the backward areas people assess the power of someone by examining the frequency of violation of laws done by him.In order to earn same prestige, many people proudly share that they are not paying the electricity bills or taxes too.i think its government's responsibility to aware the people about their responsibilities towards state.it would be better to set examples by giving offenders harsh punishments.Unless our own people act against crimes unless they realize that they have some duty towards the state,we will not be able to solve our major problems.Social pressure is the strongest agency in the world and it ensures peaceful co-existence in most of the modern countries. This must be employed in Pakistan too.

Your suggestions are appreciated but on other hand they will work up to some extent. I am from sindh and very much aware of feudalism, Peeri mureedi, Shah ji system etc. . These are some of the things which in my opinion are very much responsible for our downfall in every stance. How does a suspect gets released and victim gets arrested??? Who has hijacked our police?? Who is responsible behind electricity theft, bike snatching, ransom and allowing peoples to take illegal and unlicensed arms with themselves ?? Of course those who are backing and giving strong support to these criminals. These filthy land lords are evacuating lands which belongs to poor ones without any legal attorney and then they hire those as their farmers. . .Even in shah ji and peeri mureedi system many of educated people perform such acts which are strictly prohibited in islam. And we proudly condemn our politicians that they are the only reason for corruption in our society but it's totally opposite. They are the chosen ones. . to whom we have elected by our precious votes. I ve seen people with their family members standing in a row and waiting for rs/3000 so called Benazir Income support. It's even worst than begging. At least one does not bring or send his wife, daughter, mother etc to stand in that row. And as far as tax collection is concerned have a look what our official reports say :

"Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has collected Rs 584.8 billion in first four months, while target of Rs 2381 billion revenue collection was set for the current fiscal year.

State Minister for Production Khawaja Sheraz Mahmood said this while responding to a calling attention notice moved by Abdul Rashid Godil of MQM regarding collection, revision and cut in tax collection target. He said that the FBR had collected Rs 506 billion in first four months of previous fiscal year.

He said that the FBR has not yet revised collection target and its performance remained quite satisfactory. He said that target fixed by the government for the current fiscal year was almost 26 percent higher as compared to last financial year. He said that FBR makes massive collection in May and June of every year.

Answering to a question, the Minister said that FBR is taking steps on regular basis for broadening the tax base."

As per you people are not paying tax?? I think above information would be sufficient?? There are some law abiding citizens but they aren't being facilitated just because of those who are violating all the laws. Our NTN card doesn't have any importance, My father is working in semi-govt organization and regular tax payer, but even then we have to pay road tax, GST, RGST etc. . . Nothing works unilaterally. . . Unless govt won't become sincere problems will remain same. R.s.v.p

Bro..social pressure is not panacea for all evils from which our country is suffering.its just one aspect of the greater solution. We should not idealize the situation.Crimes and poor management are the common problems and exist in every state.
Look at USA,INDIA,AFGHANISTAN and even CHINE which is weary of growing corruption.
Our major problems are terrorism and illiteracy, they have deep history of negligence and cant be solved fortnight.we are moving towards solution.though slowly but its a good omen..what we have to do is to elect right leaders..coz our leaders will decide the fate of our future. In 2008, out of 80 million votes, around 30 million were bogus. This time i think there will be some transparency...be optimist ...and look at the glass as half filled rather than half empty.we all share similar problems.just we have to move forward.

Social pressure plays a great role in dealing with elites' wrongdoings. For example General Petraeus was not legally bound to resign over an extra marital affair, but still he had to .

Terrorism and illiteracy are the result of state's ideological confusion. For example you are still unable to decide whether children should be educated at madrassahs or schools.

You are quite right.Ideological confusion prevails because religion is often used as a tool to muster support.USA used it against soviets in afghanistan and zia used it to get massive support.

Bro i do agree with your reasonable suggestions, but these things could not be neglected even. And we have to look after problems having weight-age and majority. The only reason illiterate were not allowed to vote earlier in Britain was their decision power. And many of them were farmers, peasants, factory workers etc and majority of them were workers of election candidates. Same is the case with our nation, people living in interior are still bound and can not even speak even a single word against their masters. If we want responsible and educated leaders then we must have to educate our common voters first. So that they couldn't be pressurized by any of the power. The countries which you have mentioned, no doubt these are having much greater number of problems comparatively but they are working over them to get rid of all. I am optimist and thankful , but that's not enough to lead a peaceful and stress less life here in our country. Lets hope for the best in up coming elections. . At least i don't want any of the current party or their inheritors to rule over once again. . . We need change. :/

You are quite right.keeping in view the ethnic and sectarian polarization in our country, change will take time.I dont think next elections can bring any change.Symbol of change Imran khan has proved himself a very immature politician. His naive ideas has aliented many people.Ironically, the contestants of ppp and pml(n) are more strong in the regional dynamics. But from the stength of judiciary and media,it can be expected politicians will not be able to decieve us so openly.

Regards.

Well I think that is not the reason of ideological confusion of the state, that is something which can be called 'strategic maneuvering of a belief' . For Example in Soviet Union, anti-religious campaign by the state was put to halt and religion was not only tolerated but Christianity was revived during World War II to counter the invader's propaganda. Pakistani state's ideological confusion stems from its very foundation, i.e. whether the state should be religious theocracy or a secular democracy. We are still debating what was Quaid's vision for the country in that regard.

I agree with you that we are unable to decide between the two but we have to, in order to get rid of this confusion.
secondly we need to educate the voter but it will take long time. There can be another solution that we can set a criteria for a voter to be eligible to cast a vote on the basis of education, experience or job etc

That would be disastrous, it will give a sense that this country was made for western educated elites and poor masses are alienated from political system of the state . Don't ignore the sociocultural aspects that stem out of sociopolitical and socioeconomic makeup of the country .
