Essays r a bit tricky. i wish i cud get a better understanding of the evaluation n scoring system! Like in GMAT we r able to view sample essays ranging in scores.. u know like:The following sample essay would receive the highest rating..

or maybe there is such a thing n i’m not aware of it

I appeared in the CSS-2005 and failed in the essay.
i never bothered practicing on how to write an essay. i thought i wouldnt face any probs and get away with it....but i didnt
the topis i chose was ISLAM VS WEST. i had plenty of data to dwell on but i think i failed because i didnt take into account the following factors:
1: all my essay was a disjointed chunk of seperate paragraphs. that is, paras weren't synchronized
2: my into was abysmally pathetic
3: i was using a ball point and i couldnt erase my grammatical mistakes or otherwise
4: my conclusion was astonishingly abrupt
5: i added stuff in my essay which i cud have done without
6: sometimes, my essay diverted from the main point

i got 27 out of 100, whihc was quite encouraging for i was expecting 8. anyways, fellas, avoid all of the above and start PRACTICING
REMEMBER, practice can get u 40 (dont ask for too much)
Essay is the only paper that can dampen ure wild aspirations. well, ure aspirations may not b wild. mine were

i appeared in css-2005, passed n secured overall 21 position.in essay my topic was, Soci-eco challenges........ i secured 47 marks. well not good enough but passing it was enough. i wrote outline first.eg.
1.Social probs.
a.
b.
c. n so on.
2.eco prob.
a.
c. n so on
then i inter related social n eco prob with each oyher. like povert is mother of crime. a poor ( economics) commits crime ( social).
in end i suggested, recommendations, remedies n conclusion ( gave headings also). my essay was a bit lenthy ( 35 pages). Brain storming is imp before randomly start writing. better luck next time.

'The Economist' released weekly stands at Rs. 200/each now (previously Rs. 160). It's unaffordable. You can get them in any good book or magazine shop in Karachi.

I didn't seek the first two much, but im' sure they must also be available there in Karachi.

Economists can best be perused online www.economist.com or in a periodical section in any library or university.

Economist is world's widely circulated magazine and is available in Pakistan on the same date when it issued from London. But as Adil mentioned it is tooo costly.

You can get a copy of strategic studies digest from Mr. Book in Islamabad and can also contact Institute of Strategic Studies in Islamabad, if they can subscribe it through mail.

Quarterly Digest of Friends can also be subscribed by visiting in their office near Race Course ground in Rwp. After that they will send a copy by post.

well brother zulfi........in start we face this type of difficulty....if u have enough knowledge you can write much......
1st of all read the essay topic care fully for example if the topic is Socio-economic chalenges faced by Pakistan" in this you have to defince social problems and then social problems of Pakistan in much detail and then what challenges pakistan is facing to overcome these social problem, then same case with economic problems. Then you should give suggestion and also some crticism about the policy of Govt. in Pakistan. and then conclusion. This is what you have to do in this essay.
2nd:you do brainstorming.it means that generate as many as ideas you can about the topic.

Than make an outline. If the topics is Socio-economic challenges faced by pakistan, you do like that:
Introduction
what is social what is society
what are social problems
what are economic problems
Details
Social Chaleneges faced by pakistan
Economic Chalenges face of pakistan
Critics
Suggestions
Conclusion
