Where as both, END and DEATH would be acceptable, the question asks for the nearest in meaning - which would require the closest meaning in connection with the usage of the word.

I believe DEATH is correct, being the closest in meaning - according to usage. It is my own opinion of course.

nevertheless, it is pointless to debate over it.

Your assertion is right...put you seldom see (atleast i havent till now) the "demise of evil" or "demise of dictatorial rule" or anything of that sort in any work related to literature etc. neither heard of it using it in this sense...death was the most appropriate one :P....

Last Island, I have gone through all the possible ways to use "demise" but sorry to say in all these sentences demise indicates death of any thing. Either death of man, or an organization, or any movement etc.

Word "demise" is more powerful, severe and pervasive in meaning then "end". Keeping i view the gravity of its meaning "death" is more closest in sense then mere "end".

In legal terminology 'demise" refers to "death.

"Swore of God" is never acceptable whereas "swore upon God" and Swore to God" are normally considered better.

What do you say Last Island???

Is not it correct to say? " He swore of God" ????

I personally think that It could also be acceptable according to the sense of usage. isn't it?

Or is it mandatory to use "UPON" before "GOD"????

As, if we use the same sentence in urdu we will not say . Kay us nay ALLAH per kasam khai. Rather we would say, Us nay ALLAH ke kasam khai
