Women's Protection Bill by Punjab Govt.
This bill has been passed by Punjab Assembly to protect women from violence, which has sparked debates on media channels. There's no doubt that women have been a victim of different kinds of violence, and it continues to exist unless a strong law implements to stop violence and which suits our society too. But the bill which was passed raised many different question over its consequences, and is said to have been copied from west. Federal sharia court did not give a green signal to this bill followed by raising concerns that it's not aligning with Islamic Law thereby it's un-islamic. All the religious entities seem to have been united over this issue. So what do you people think that what are the pros and cons of this bill, and if implemented as it is, then what kind of changes would it bring in our society? Have your say.

This bill has a procedure to track the culprits through GPS wearable, which if removed has a punishment penalty for the culprits.
This in itself could be un-Islamic as it advertises to the general public that the person wearing it is a culprit. But in Islam this practice has not been the norm to publicize the culprit. Instead as we know, Allah S.W.T labelled foreheads of the wrongdoers or sinners in the previous Ummahs, but due to the prayer/dua of our beloved Prophet Muhammad P.B.U.H. Allah S.W.T discontinued doing so for Ummat-e-Muhammadi. When Allah Himself has stopped highlighting the sins of the sinners and/or labelling the sinners; then how could we the people do the same to highlight sins of the culprits. This very thing in my view seems un-Islamic.

Undoubtedly the act is but need of hour. Unholy edifice of patriarchy can only be down trodden by such acts. However, so far as the effectiveness of the act is concerned there emerges ambiguity. Pakistan’s criminal justice system does not consider domestic violence as a crime. Aggrieved woman can drag her husband till bars, how she will fight when justice system remains flawed. Nevertheless, this act is more than good for women but in order to make it effective Pakistan's criminal justice system needs to be reformed.

No bill is itself good or bad as consequences (implementation) of particular judgement, law or bill define its credibility. In our society, slow process of dispensing speedy justice and above all poor implementation makes the fate of every law or bill less credible while jeopardizing the whole bill or law. So, the simplest form of implementation can fix it. While, if it is political point-scoring then nothing can stop it to be used as counter-productive.

council of islamic ideology is a well defined mesogynist institute. They never talk sense. Instead of presenting suggestion/amendments(which will surely need some brains) they are rejecting the whole bill.
The bill is a necessity in a society where domestic violence is on the rise. |

The Women’s Protection Act was passed in the Punjab province last week, the largest district in Pakistan. It gives unprecedented legal protection to women suffering from domestic and sexual violence, as well as emotional abuse.
Key features include calls for a Freephone reporting hotline and for women’s shelters to be set up. The law also establishes district-level panels to investigate allegations of abuse and mandates the use of GPS bracelets to keep track of offenders. However, the bill has been met with resistance locally amid concerns that it is incompatible with the Koran. Muhammad Khan Sherani, the head of the Council of Islamic Ideology said at a news conference, that the group believe the law to be ‘un-Islamic’. He said: “The whole law is wrong” and cited passages from the Koran. Countries where sexual violence has become a way of life The council has previously been criticised for ruling that DNA evidence cannot be used in rape cases and that a woman cannot bring a rape case to court until four male witnesses can testify to the incident. Fazlur Rehman, chief of Jamiat-i-Ulema Islam, one of Pakistan’s largest religious parties, also said that the law is un-Islamic. He said: “This law makes a man insecure. This law is an attempt to make Pakistan a Western colony again.” Local women’s charities have welcomed the law, including the Aurat Foundation which has argued that the bill will provide greater protection and support for domestic violence victims.
