How to choose optional subject. There are 3 main factors which you should consider.
1- Your back ground in education.
2- Interest
3- Scoring trend in past CSS examinations.

It is not necessary to choose subjects from your back ground but ones first choice should be subjects of their back ground if they can excellently tackle them. You have completed your BSC with combination of 3 subjects and all three of them are a part of CSS syllabus. I do not know what is your major subject in these subjects. Knowing about that is crucial to guide you.

According to CSS optional subject list
Chemistry 200 marks (2 papers of 100 marks each)-- Group 2
Zoology 100 marks (1 paper)-- Group 5
Botany 100 marks (1 paper)-- Group 5

(As zoology and botany belong to same group 5 so you can choose only one of them as according to rules 1 subject of 100 marks can only be chosen from group 5)

Now I am guiding you about your back ground subject by taking assumptions:

If Chemistry was you major, go through syllabus of chemistry and access that with how many topics you are familiar with. If answer is 90% and above you can choose chemistry and of course you have to cover the remaining topics on your own or with the help of a teacher. If you think you cannot do that then leave it. My sincere advise is not to take Chemistry as optional. There are not many aspirants who had recently taken chemistry as optional. If there are aspirants who had taken chemistry as optional they are not on forum and there is no post regarding new score trends of this subject. According to previous score trends this paper was highly technical and low scoring as well even experts fears to take this subject as optional.

About Botany & Zoology: You can only choose 1. Go through syllabus of both and choose which you think is better according to your interest and your caliber in these subjects.

Also same is the case with botany as with chemistry and not many has attempted this paper and there is no information regarding its scoring trend from past few attempts. About Zoology although new score trends are not available but some previous attempts are available and scores were excellent.

You can search in relevant section of each subject for more detailed posts. If you want to choose 1 of above three I suggest you to go for Zoology.

Now lets talk about your other options. You must understand that you have to choose many subjects in which you have no prior background. Here two factors will play its part

1- Interest
2- Scoring trend

Now I am going to guide you by keeping in mind the scoring trend and generally interesting subjects.

Group 1: IR or PS (200 each & you can choose only 1) and my recommendation is IR being more scoring, interesting and helpful in other subjects. For more details and about final selection of subject you should go through syllabus of both in detail

Group 4: US history and History of Pakistan & India (Us history is short and can help in Essay, IR, CA paper while History of P&I is a subject you have studies till your graduation and you are familiar with many of its concepts but it is lengthy Both are scoring as per previous score trend but my suggestion is US history for more better scores)

Group 5: While checking syllabus of Zoology and botany please go through syllabus of environmental science as well. It is highly interesting and scoring subject. It is highly recommended if you have science background. If you take my advise I will suggest to choose it instead of botany or zoology. It has many topics which are from your background.

Group 6. International law- Only few law articles rest is very easy but technical. Can be prepared at home with just two books. Extremely high scoring

Group 7: Your can choose only 1 from the list (Best ones are psychology, regional language of your province, Journalism and sociology.) My suggestions is psychology since you have science background.

Choose subjects with marks totaling 600.
group 1: 1 subject of 200 marks
2: 1 subject of 200 marks or two subjects of 100 marks
3-7: 1 subject from each group of 100 marks each subject

You must choose 1 subject from group I or II or both to complete your 600 marks.

Now, go through syllabus of subjects which I have suggested. Take your time. Choose wisely and rationally. After that you can take advice about books and material in relevant sections of this forum.
