I am having a hectic routine. I have a job test after 5 days. I have a interview in coming month. I have to appear in coming months in two provinicial commissions (special cadre) with 8 papers in each. I am preparing notes for them. I totally exhaust at the end of the day. I am fresh graduate I won't appear in CSS 2016 rather my plan is to appear in this prestigious exam in 2017. Though I have sufficient time left but I do not want to shun my css preparation all together. So I am also giving half hour to one hour daily to its preparation too. I really want to give my all time and energy to the preparation of this exam but I can not. You are right we all must put equal efforts here in helping each other. I am sorry that I didn't participate in the thread as much as I should have participated. From now on I will try my level best to give as much time as I can to this.

Hey,
@exclusively It took me a little while to go through your sentences; hence, the late response. 1) I met him prior to his departure from Karachi [you've done it correctly]. 2) Incorrect: He is the ablest and efficient teacher. Incorrect: He is the most ablest and efficient teacher. As @Mashaal pointed out: Correct: He is the most able and efficient teacher. 3)Incorrect: They did their duty should be rewarded. Correct: They did their duty, and should be rewarded. This incorrect sentence is known as a run own sentence. Basically 2 independent clauses are incorrectly joined. They can be joined by a conjunction, a full stop or conjunctive adverbs (therefore, however, etc.) 4) Incorrect: It is no doubt that the man is dead. Incorrect: It is no doubt that the man is died. Correct: There is no doubt that the man is dead. 5)Incorrect: I doubt that he will come. Incorrect: I have doubt whether/if he will come. Correct: I doubt if he will come. Source: http://dictionary.cambridge.org/dict.../english/doubt 6) Incorrect: No sooner he left than the storm broke. Correct: No sooner had he left than the storm broke. [You've done it correctly]. 7) Incorrect: He likes me reading the novel. Correct: He likes my reading the novel. [You've done it correctly]. 8) Incorrect: I asked him what he ate. Incorrect: I asked him about what he ate. Correct: I asked him what he had eaten. Try to work backwards in Direct-Indirect questions: Once you figure out what the direct speech could've been you have a higher chance of getting the answer correct. So, this is how you can arrive at your answer: Direct: He said to him, “What did you eat?” Indirect: He asked him what he had eaten. 9) Incorrect: He ran as fast as he could run. Correct: He ran as fast as he could. 10) Incorrect: I said it in his face. Incorrect: I said it on his face. Correct: I said it to his face. To his face: idiom, it means "to say something unpleasant directly to someone" (http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/say+to+face). Incorrect:He made three goals in the last match. Correct: He scored three goals in the last match. 11) Incorrect: When Amjad or his brother visits us we are delighted. Correct: When Amjad or his brother visits us, we are delighted. This is, in my opinion, an adverbial clause sentence with the comma missing: Pg 497: Exploring the World of English: "In a Complex sentence, if the adverbial clause is placed before the principal clause, or is inserted in it, the adverbial clause is marked off by commas: When he was born, a large number of friends came to see him. to become delighted means the same as we are delighted. 12) Incorrect: He asked me where I came from. Incorrect: He asked me from where I came. Correct:He asked me where I had come from. Direct-Indirect speech: work backwards: what would the question have been in direct speech; Most likely: He said to me, “Where do you come from?” Indirect speech would've been: He asked me where I had come from. The use of I had:Exploring the world of English (page no. 488): Direct: He said to me, “Why did you strike him? Indirect: He asked me why I had struck him. 13) Incorrect: There is little to do in such a hopeless case as this. Incorrect: There is little to do in such a helpless case as this. Correct: There is little to do in such a hopeless case as this (one). Reasoning: Missing preposition 14) Incorrect: He always had hatred against inefficiency. Incorrect: He always has hatred against inefficiency. Correct: He has always hated inefficiency. ** I am not sure about this correction.** 15) Incorrect: You ought to have treated him you equal. Incorrect: You should have treated him equal. Correct: You ought to have treated him as your equal. 16) Incorrect: He enjoys the most worldwide reputation. Incorrect: He earns the most worldwide reputation. Correct: He enjoys a worldwide reputation. 17) Incorrect: The boy who was promoted, he was my brother. Incorrect: The boy who was promoted, is my brother. Correct: The boy who was promoted, was my brother. Reasoning: no need for 'he' since we are using who in the sentence. Tense should be past because of 'was' promoted. 18) Incorrect: He availed of the opportunity. Incorrect: He availed of his opportunity. Correct: He availed himself of the opportunity. Reasoning: Availed: intransitive verb it needs an object in the possessive form(himself, myself, yourself, etc.). 19) Incorrect: I would sooner quit than to do it. Incorrect: I would sooner quit than doing it. Correct: I would sooner quit than do it. 20) Incorrect: He is M.A. while his friend is B.A. Correct: He has an M.A. whereas his friend has a B.A. Reasoning: Sources: [http://english.stackexchange.com/que...not-begin-wit]. [http://www.quickanddirtytips.com/edu...sus-an?page=1]. You hold/have a Master’s or a Bachelor’s degree, you can’t be the degree itself; is implies you are the degree, it doesn’t make any sense. As for the use of a and an before acronyms, it depends on the sound that one makes in the pronunciation of M.A. and B.A. 21) Incorrect: He has been died today. Correct: He has died today. Reasoning: Perfect present tense: he has died today No been is required. pg 434 of Exploring the world explains the present perfect tense: sentences ending in this week, this month, etc. which indicate an interest in the present require the present perfect. 22)Incorrect: He is hardly hit by the bank's failure. Incorrect: He is hardly hit by the bankrupt. Correct: He was hardly hit by the failure of the bank. Hit: is usually in past tense. Reasoning: Use of the Possessive Case 60. “The Possessive Case is now used chiefly with the names of living thing; as, The Governor’s bodyguard; the lion’s mane. 63. The following phrases are also in common use:- At his fingers' ends; for mercy's sake; to his heart's content; at his wit's end; a boat's crew. 64. The possessive of a proper name or of a noun denoting a trade, profession, or relationship may be used to denote a building or place of business (church, house, school, college, shop, hospital, the atre; etc.) as, She has gone to the baker's ( = baker's shop). Tonight I am dining at my uncle's ( = uncle's house). Can you tell me the way to St .Paul's ( ='St. Paul's church)? I attend the Town High School but my cousin attends St. Xavier's. He was educated ai St. Joseph's. 65. When you are in doubt whether to use a noun in the possessive case or with the preposition of, remember that, as a general rule, the possessive case is used to denote possession or ownership. Thus it is better to say 'the defeat of the enemy' than 'the enemy's defeat', even though no doubt as to the meaning would arise. Sometimes, however, a noun in the possessive case has a different meaning from a noun used with the preposition of; as, ‘The Prime Minister's reception in Delhi’ means a reception held by the Prime Minister in Delhi. ‘The reception of the Prime Minister in Delhi’ means the manner in which the people welcomed him when he entered Delhi. The phrase 'the love of a father' may mean either 'a father's love of his child' or 'a child's love of his father.” Source: Wren and Martin 18-19. 23) Incorrect: This is another side of the question. Incorrect:This is another part of the question. Correct: There is another side to the question. **I am not sure about this correction** 23) Incorrect: The debate was now coming to a close. Incorrect: The debate is coming to the conclusion now. Correct: The debate is coming to a close now. Reasoning: [positioning of words]. Come to a close: is an idiom. It means to reach its end. 24) He ran three hundred meters race. Correct: He ran a three hundred meter race. Reasoning: [http://english.stackexchange.com/que...lar-or-plural]. 25) Incorrect: My tooth is paining very badly. Incorrect: My tooth is paining badly. Correct: My tooth is aching very badly. 26)Incorrect: Najma eats like Salma does.Najma eats like/similar to Salma does. Correct: Najma eats as Salma does. Reasoning: The clause after as has a verb. Like is used as a preposition before nouns or to indicate comparison: she walks like him. Don't use like if there is a verb after it. 27)Incorrect: He has lit up the fire of reform. Incorrect: He has lit up the reform. Correction: I think it should be he has lit up a fire of reform. It sounds right to me, but I don't have any concrete evidence to support my answer. 28) Incorrect: I did not know that honesty was the best policy. Incorrect: I did not know whether honesty was the best policy. Correct: I did not know that honesty is the best policy. Reasoning: Exploring the World of English:Pg 433: use the present tense when the statement is necessarily true. I hope this helps. I will try to help everyone out, but since there are a few months left to the exam I am a little short of time. So, I might post a little late. Regards, |

22)Incorrect: He is hardly hit by the bank's failure.
Incorrect: He is hardly hit by the bankrupt. Correct: He was hardly hit by the failure of the bank. Hit: is usually in past tense. Hey, Can someone verify the use of hardly hit in this sentence. I am a little confused about its usage. I think it should be hit hard. I'd like to revise my correction: He was hit hard by the failure of the bank. Source:http://aimpublishing.com/aimpub/word...-be-hit-hardly I've made a mistake in a tense: 14) Incorrect: He always had hatred against inefficiency. Incorrect: He always has hatred against inefficiency. Revised Correction: He had always hated inefficiency. ** I am not sure about this correction.** |
