Jihadi Movement was found by the Syed Ahmed Shaeed, It was the outstanding movement, which purely based on the Jihad against the Sikhs of Punjab and the KPK’s ati-Islamic actors. Actually the Muslims were being demoralized and demotivated in the teachings of Islam by the anti-Islamic elements. However, During the time of Syed Ahmed Shaheed the condition of the Sub-Continent had been worst owing to the British interference and also the Sikh were making problems extensively for the Muslims Society. The Mosques were replaced with the temples, even the adhan was forbidden. Muslims conditions had been going bed to worst day by day. However, In these cicumtances, with the grace of God the Jihadi Movement came into exist and fought with the enemies of Islam and Muslim society bravely. It was the contribution of Syed Ahmed Shaheed. The struggle of the Jehadi Movement proved fruitful for the glorification of Islam and Muslim society by his founder.

The founder of Jehadi Movement, Sayed Ahmed belonged to a family of Rai Baraly and was born in 1786. His father name was Shah Illam who was a great personality of his time. Sayed was the lion hearted hero and a great reformer, commander, thinker and mystic, who fought against the British and Sikh for the purification of Islam and Muslim Society. He was greatly impressed by the teaching of Shah Waliullah and was disciple of his son Shah Abdul Aziz. From the beginning of his career he was a Sarwar of Nawab Amir Khan, the ruler of Tonk, from where he learnt military tactics and diverse disciplines in a lot of fields especially in the field of warfare.

However, during the time of Sayed Ahmed the whole society was suffering from a lot of dangerous problems religiously, politically and socially. As a matter of fact, in those circumstances there were the domination of Sikh regime and the Punjab was being ruled by Ranjeet Singh autocratically. On the other hand, the KPK had also been fallen into the hands of Sikh’s regime. The Holy places of the Muslims were not saved anymore. Because, the mosques were replaced with the temples moreover the adhan practices were forbidden by the anti-Islamic actors.

Therefore, for the cause of Islam and its glorification, Sayed Ahmed Shaeed himself made a strategy to tackle the critical condition and he served himself for the revival of Islam and the society. Therefore, He purified the Muslim society in sphere of all aspects in the Sub-Continent. According to the western scholar his political part was directed against the British and the Sikhs’ activities, as a matter of fact they had forbidden the call of Adhan and moreover they were interfering with the Muslims religious practices in the Punjab and KPK.

So, Sayed went to Arabia for two years where he also performed Hajj with his loving friends-Shaikh Ismail and Maulana Haye in 1821. After returning he prepared Jihad along with his friends and a number of his followers. He had crystal clear idea that if the Punjab would be tackled from the hands of Sikhs, then the Muslims would have been at the good condition in sphere of religiously, politically and socially similarly like earlier. Therefore, he began his Jihadi Movement from the Punjab with his friends and 6000 followers. He went to the Punjab where he invited other Muslims brothers for Jihad against the Sikh. Owing to his invitation a number of people joined his hands, gradually the number of Muslim forces rose to 8000. After that he reached Noshera in December 1826 and established his headquarter there. Then, sent a message to Ranjeet Singh to embrace Islam or be ready to face the Mujahideens and be ready to be killed as well. Ranjeed Singh turn down the offer, as a result in 1866 AD. Mujahideen attacked the Sikh forces and the Budh Sindh, the cousin of the Ranjeet singh was defeated by the Mujahideens.

With the great success, the Mujaheedens had been confident to go for further areas in order to crush the anti-Islamic forces. On the other hand, in these circumstances, a conspiracy was made by the enemies in order to demoralize the Jihadi Movement. Nevertheless, In 1829 Sardar Yar Muhammad (Brother of the Sulatan Muhammad Khan) who joined hands with the Sikh secretly and then tried to poison the Sayed Ahmed but was killed by Mujahideens in an encounter attack. Although, with the amazing success the Peshawar was captured in 1830.

After occupying Peshawar, Sayed Ahmed paid his attention towards the introduction of Shariat. At this time He tried hi best to reform the society and urge the people that they would not practice the un-Islamic beliefs. In this regard, Sardar of Peshawer influenced by his ideology and the Sardar with his Peshawari brothers joined their hands with the Sayed Ahmed and declared him as a Khalifa, in this way people used to accept his any order to be done excessively.

In November 1831, right after the two months of getting Peshawar, Sayed withdrew from Peshawer in favor of Sultan Muhammad Khan (the brother of Yar Muhammad) who promised him to pay fixed amount to the Mujahideens as a tribute.

After that, In Peshawar, Ranjeet Singh sent General venture, a French General, against the Mujahideens and also threw his propaganda to the people of Peshawar for the misconception among the followers of Sayed. As a result, the Peshaweri people came under the propaganda and victimized very badly. Consequently, Peshawar had become free from the grasp of the Mujahideens. On the other hand, a battle was fought between the Mujahideens and the Sikh in the year of 1831, in this war the Mujahideen were headed by Sayed Ahmed including his friends, Maluna Abdul haye, Ismail and also other many Mujahideens, they fought bravely until they received the tile of the martyrdom.

Consequently, after the defeat of Balakot the Jihadi movement did not stop its progress but lacked in the leadership for the time being. Because, in the end of the movement during the incident of Blakot. The movement had been failed owing to the lack of fund, poor military tactics, sectarian propaganda against the reforms and the blunder which was done by Sayed Ahmed Shaheed he gave his own ideologies which people could not understand and came under the propaganda of the Siskh. On the other hand, there were no cooperation and coordination among the local populace. Thus, later on, some of the followers of this Movement carried on the same mission and would have been successful to the great extent to the upcoming years exclusively.

This movement granted new zest to the Muslims and washed the blots of evils from their hearts and made them ready for the Holy war with infidels. Sikhs were possessing Lahore and N.W.F.P, from some time and governing the area by cruel rules and regulations. They martyred and disgraced thousands of Muslims without any fault. The recitation of Kalmah, Islamic names, Adhaan, collective prayers, slaughters of cow etc were forbidden. Several un-Islamic beliefs were entered into Muslim community and the original shape of Islam was un-visible.

Rise of Jehadi Movement:

When the Sikh cruelties became out of temper, Syed Ahmad Shaheed Brailvi accepted the responsibility of reformation of Muslim community and decided to launch Jihad against the Sikhs. For this purpose he founded “Jehadi Movement (The Movement o Jihad)” which is also known as “The Mujahideen Movement”. The Muslims of Indo-Pakistan responded to his call and thousands of Muslims got themselves enrolled in the Jehadi Movement. Syed Ahmed Shaheed decided to launch Jihad from North West Frontier region of the country. Thus on 17th January 1826 he started his journey along with thousands of Mujahideens. He reached Sindh via Gwalior, Tonak, Ajmer and Marwar. Then he went to Afghanistan through Balochistan. From Afghanistan he arrived at Nowshera after nine months journey.

Contribution of Jehadi Movement in the life of Indian Muslims:

On his arrival in the Frontier province the warriors of Yousaf Zai tribe, followers of Pir Syed Akbar Shah and the local Muslims joined the Jihad Movement. Syed Ahmed Shaheed firstly tried to convince Ranjit Singh regarding reservations of Muslims but on his refusal declared war against Sikhs. Ranjit Singh the Sikh ruler of Punjab sent Budh Singh at the head of ten thousand soldiers to meet the challenge of the Mujahideens. On 21st December 1826 a strong contingent of Mujahideens attacked the Sikh army at night. As a result thousands of Sikh soldiers were killed and Budh Singh had to retreat with heavy losses. Later on after several skirmishes the sikh army was defeated in the battle of Hazru. These victories inspired a number of Pathan tribes to join Jehadi Movement. The number of Mujahideen rose to 80,000. Syed Ahmed Shaheed Brelvi was given the status of “Amir-ul-Momineen” on January 11, 1827. Islamic laws were also enforced in the area which was controlled by Syed Ahmed Shaheed Brelvi.

These victories and successes of Mujahideens disturbed Ranjit Singh very much. He decided to weaken the Mujahideens through diplomacy. He reached Peshawar and won the sympathies of two local chiefs Yar Mohammad Khan and Sultan Mohammad Khan by promise to point them the ruler of Peshawar. Thus the Muslims were divided into two camps. However Syed Ahmed Shaheed succeeded in conquering Peshawar in November 1830. Through mistake Syed Ahmed Khan appointed Sultan Mohammad Khan the ruler of Peshawar. Unfortunately Sultan Mohammad turned a traitor and hatched a conspiracy against Syed Ahmed Shaheed and tried to poison Sayed Ahmed but was killed by Mujahideens in an encounter attack. Although, with the amazing success the Peshawar was captured in 1830. In the meantime Sikh army under Sher Singh advanced against the Mujahideen. Syed Ahmed Shaheed gathered ail of his forces and encamped at Balakot which was a very secure place. Sardar Sher Singh too arrived at Balakot at the head of 20 thousands soldiers and with modern weapons. The Sikh army besieged the area. The famous battle of Balakot was fought on 6th May 1831. The Sikhs emerged victorious. Almost all the Mujahideens including Syed Ahmed Shaheed and also his loyal friends Maluna Abdul haye and Shah Ismail were martyred.

Conclusion

Although Syed Ahmed Shaheed failed to finish Sikh rule in Punjab yet his Jihad Movement Kindled a flame of freedom in the Sub-Continent. The Pathans of the Frontier province were greatly inspired by the valiant deeds of the Mujahideens, The tribesmen continued the Jihad for freedom against the British. Similarly the Mujahideen spread the spirit of Jihad throughout the length and breadth of Sub-Continent. The spirit of freedom led to the war of independence in 1857 besides that Titu Mir also started a movement for same objectives in Bengal after getting inspiration from Syed Ahmed Shaheed. In addition the Jihad Movement imbibed in the Muslims the spirit of Islamic nationalism which ultimately led to the Two Nation Theory and establishment of Pakistan.

If you want to start EDS as well then I would say that Only one topic should be discussed on daily basis. Because, I have to prepare my optional subjects also, so it will be quite difficult for me to keep it continue if both eds and pak affairs are to be discussed simultaneously. And won't you think that it will be imbroglio to prepare send and then discuss both topics at the same day? dealing with one topic daily will be easy for us and in this way we shall be in touch with both subjects.

I agree with you. first we have to complete Pak Aff. Then we start the rest of Subjects. But, some body told me to start it that's why I posted this. However, One question is enough for Pak Aff to discuses on daily basis. After Pak Aff, we have to start Islamiat. So get ready for Islamiat as well. Now I am going to attempt today's question. You must attempt too. Thanks........

Q:5. Critically evaluate the contribution of 'Faraizi Movement' in the life of Muslims in the Sub-Continent? (20 Marks)

In the first half of the nineteenth centrally, in the Bengal Muslim people and the society was suffering from many problems i.e religious, political and social. As a matter of fact, during that time, the British regime and the Hindus had imposed un-fair taxes on the Muslim people. Besides, the innocent people was being jailed owing to the hand made laws of the Hindus. However, agriculture condition was on apex. The Mulim labors used to work hard in order to product qualitative crops. Despite doing hard working they were not given to the legitimate salaries. On the other hand, un-Islamic policies were constituted by the British regime. Therefore, The condition of the Muslim people had been miserable and awful in such circumstances.

In such critical condition, A Movement was started by Haji Shariatullah with the name of Faraizi Movement in order to get the Muslim people in the fold of Islam and also he tried to fight against the unfair activities which were being done by the Hindus and the British regime. However, this movement was mainly on the basis of the basic beliefs and the practices of Islam. As Hajji Shariatullah proclaimed the agenda of his movement to get the Muslim people towards the teaching of Islam. On the other hand, he tried his best to work for the glorification of Islam and he openly opposed the the un-Islamic beliefs which had been constituted by the anti-Islamic actors. Besides he gave urged that the Muslim people would not carry Tazia and dancing in the weddings. He also replaced the trend of Piri Muridi into Usad and Shagird. Moreover, he he declared the Bengal a Dar-ul-Haurb that means a noon Muslims' country and ordered non observance of Friday and Eid prayers. Although, He strongly rejected the bear taxes and the the culture of the Hindus domination.

However, in 1840 he was died and the mission of his movement was carried on by his own son named Daddhu Mian. He was not well educated but was active in politics exclusively. Therefore, He carried on his father's mission. But, his ideologies was bit different from his father. He divided Bengal into parts and proclaimed that whenever a Muslim was found to pay un-fair taxes to the British regime then he would be punished before him. Because according to him the Muslim would not have to pay un-fair taxes of lands instead of legitimate revenue taxes. On the other hand, he was the view of that the whole territory is belonged to Almighty Allah. Therefore, one should not pay the un-fair dues or similar things on the name of taxes. Moreover, he dared to fight against the British regime and Hindus. He was brave personality who stood against the Hindu landlords and British regime. Though he tackle the anti-Islamic activities and faced the circumstances. As as a result, his success earned name and fame in all over the India. Therefore, after the alarming his brave activities, a conspiracy was made against him and he was arrested on the charges of sparking sedition and died in 1892.

To the sum up. The Faraizi Movement was against the British regime and the Hindus activities. As above mentioned that this movement was based mainly on the basis of Islamic Beliefs i.e sonic-economical. But, Haji Shariatullah did not make a strong strategy for the revival of the Bengali Muslims for instance In his agenda some other activities such as the prohabitation of Tazia, Shagirdi Muridi and the policies which he mad was not good enough. However, after his death his son fought against the British regime and the Hindus for the cause of legitimate rights of Bengali Hindus. But, Dhahdu Mia's punishment to the people on the name of paying agriculture tax was not a good act indeed. Undoubtedly, the Faraizi Movement was beneficial for the Bengali people but for the coming year it lacked in the agenda and its strategy according to the Quran and Sunna to the some extent exclusively.

Thanks.............

Critically evaluate the contribution of 'Faraizi Movement' in the life of Muslims in the Sub-Continent

Fraizi Movement began in the first half of 19th century was aimed at reforming the fate of Bengali Muslims. The ignorance from Islam was prevailing. Muslims were being persecuted at the hands of cruel rulers. Till then the British government had acquired a strong hold over the sub-continent which had created great problems for Muslims. Hindu landlords, in collusion with British, used to persecute the Muslim peasantry. Muslims were being denied their fundamental rights. These were the circumstances which urged a great reformer and scholar to launch his movement to ameliorate Muslim society.

Haji Shriat Ullah, the founder of Fraizi movement was born at a small village of Faridpur district. At the very young age he left for Arabia where he received higher eduation in Islam under the guidance of ablest scholars of that time. After spending a long period there, he returned to sub-continent and started his reform movement. His movement basically focused the most depressed class of the Muslims. In the beginning he sought to spread his Islamic views in his own area, but gradually he started inviting the people of other areas as well to return to the true Islamic practices. Initially he faced a great opposition as the unwilling forces sought to curb his efforts. He noticed that the people were indulging themselves in the un-Islamic activities. He asked them to give up un-Islamic customs and practices and to act upon the commandments of the religion called Faraiz or duties. Hence his followers came to be known as Faraizi. The important aspects of his movement were:

1- He maintained that after the occupation of British, the sub-continent has become 'dar-ul-harb', therefore, prayer of 'Jumah' and 'Eid' could not be offered (Unless the country is liberated from infidels and again made 'Dar-ul-Islam)
2- The titles of 'Pir' and 'Mureed' should be replaced with the tiles of 'Ustad' and 'Shagird'. The overwhelming respect of the Mystics and religious scholars should be brought to an end for creating harmony and equality in society.
3-Muslim peasants are to be united so that they could fight against the injustices and persecutions of Hindu landlords.

The movement brought a new spirit in the people of Bengal. They got together against the Hindu landlords for the demand of their rights. Muslims came to realize the atrocities which were being committed against them and started raising their voice for their privileges. They abandoned un-Islamic practices and a new enthusiasm in Muslims for Islam was witnessed. The most important contribution of his movement was that it infused in Muslims the spirit of independence. Thus, Shriat-Ullah sowed the seeds of independence in Bengal which later on culminated in the war of independence. His movement did not stop after his death.

His son Mohisn-ud-din, popularly known as Dadu mian who was not well versed in Islamic teachings like his father, but possessed extraordinary organizational capabilities, kept this movement continue. He strengthened the movement by organizing it in a systematic way. Dadu mian acquired great fame among Muslim peasants. He infused a militant tinge in his movement by revolting against the government. In few areas, he established his own government by appointing Khalifas who established the rules and regulations over there on his directions. He established his own courts and asked everyone not to go to government for settling their disputes and other issues. He was particularly very strict against those landlords who dared to go to the government despite his reluctance.

His prime focus was to liberate Muslim peasants from cruelties of landlords. The Muslim peasant were required to pay heavy taxes for supporting the religious rituals of their Hindu lanlords. Dadu mian strongly opposed this practice and declared that the earth belonged to Allah Almighty and no one has right to occupy it and to impose taxes upon poor peasants. He incited the peasants to rebel against the landlords. His averse activities for landlords caused great problems for them and they joined hands to get rid of him.

The British government and landlords tried to use their usual tactics of leveling false allegations. He was accused of looting few homes; and was made to implicate in another false case of murder. However, due the lack of evidence he was not indicted.

Fraizi Movement had put immense courage in the Muslims to strive for their rights. Many un-Islamic activities were put to an end by the teachings of Haji shariat-ullah. The Muslim peasantry which was suffering at the hands of landlords instigated to throw the yoke of slavery. This movement had had a great impacts on the Muslim. Notwithstanding all its efforts for the cause of Muslims, this movement could not gain its true objectives, however. The participation of Dadu mian and his followers in the war of independence was motivated by religious zeal rather than rational strategy. The defeat in war caused great anguish in the Muslims as aftermaths of war were detrimental for them. Muslims were attributed with the charge of mutiny and British government inclined towards punishing the Muslims for settling all previous accounts. In these circumstances there had been no movement to support the Muslims who had become the most downtrodden community. This was the result of immediate-- without taking steps for proper organisation and preparation of war-- decision of the leaders of that movement to wage a war against British government.
