Translation

Reason has bestowed on me the eye of the wise,
Love has taught me the ways of frenzy and abandon.

No wine, no beakers, no glasses to go round,
It is the sparkle in Thy eyes that brightens us all.

My wandering words are not poetry at all,
But I am just the knower of a secret divine.

Like a bud that waits for the morning breeze,
My throbbing heart is anxious to find its bloom.

Is this to be called a Presence, or is it an Absence?
I am the only one, alone in a multitude.

The path of reason was smooth for me to pass,
But I was lost on the path of ecstasy.

Translation

My plaint at last evoked
Responses from heaven;
The veil is removed,
And speech is vouchsafed to me.

Ecstasies in love
Have an even tenor:
Consuming fire of passion
From the first to the last.

The rule of manly conduct
For all nations should be:
The sword and lance come first,
The harp and lyre last.

The mind’s rites of drinking
Are strange indeed in the West:
Intoxication first,
Intoxicants last.

Nadir Shah’s glory,
And Tamburlaine’s splendour,
Writ in sand they were,
In the annals of time.

After the moments of Presence,
Solitude will be mine;
The cloud and the lightning
Will now split a part.

Default

Translation

The sun, the moon, the stars
And all life on earth,
Are shackled by the tyranny of time
Victions of transience.

Thou art in command of all
In the chain of Being;
Angels and species on earth
Are legions of thy armies.

Regent of God on earth,
Thou knowest not thy worth;
Sunk by self—abnegation,
Sunk by a lack of vision.

How long wilt thou be
A slave of the worthless world?
Either be an ascetic,
Or a king of men.

The holy men in sanctums
Inspire me not;
Their souls are passionless,
Their talk is puerile.

Translation

Every object has the urge
To manifest itself;
Every atom serves
An unknown divine will.

Life is death without
The impulse to assert itself.,
The building up of Selfhood
Is a sublime assertion.

The wandering stars are sad,
Solitary and lost;
For solitude is the doom
Of all existent life.

The pale—faced moon,
Remote from the starry realm,
Is alone, adrift,
In the cosmic void.

Thou art the only truth
In this world of illusion;
The rest is all a glassy—
Fabric of thy vision.

Translation

Is it a miracle,
Or is it the change of time,
The West’s magical powers
Are lost in the East.

My lightning—destroyed abode
Has taught me the truth,
That the thunderbolt itself
Is a home for songbirds,

Submission can be to God,
Or beggary pure and simple;
Serve either God alone,
Or serve the meanest of men.

Inheritor of faith,
Thou dost no longer possess
The words that conquer all,
The deeds that conquer the world.

Hearts did tremble once
At a single glance of thine,
But now thou hast lost
Thy power as a man of God.

Translation

Why should I ask wise men about my origin?
For my mind ponders on the end of my life.

Raise thy Selfhood so high that before each dispensation,
God Himself may ask thee what thy wishes are.

If I am an alchemist, my only alchemy
Is the yearning and the passion that consume my heart.

I know not about those dark, unknown, mysterious eyes,
That, in their fathomless depths, have power over my fate.

If that absorbed man of the West * had been alive today,
Iqbal would have taught him about the attributes of God.

The agony of morning sighs has lacerated my heart,
If this is a punishment, O God, what sin have I committed?

* (Iqbal’s note): Nietzsche, the famous philosopher of Germany, who was unable to determine his exact emotional experiences, and whose philosophical speculations led him astray.

Translation

When the love of God teaches self—awareness,
To slaves are revealed the secrets known to kings.

Plaints and yearnings alone can bring success,
Whether it be Rumi or Razi or Ghazali the great.

O leader of men, despair not of their worth,
Loyal to thee thy followers are, though sluggish.

O ethereal bird! It is better to starve to death,
Than to live on a prey that clogs thy wings in flight.

Better than Darius and Alexander is the fakir,
Whose piety has the attributes of ‘The Tiger of God.’
